The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's swimming and diving team opens its 2016-17 campaign this Saturday at the All-Wisconsin Invitational.
The Warhawks enter the new season coming off a third-place finish at last year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Graduated senior
Sierra Becker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) was named WIAC Diver of the Meet for the second time in her career after sweeping the 1- and 3-meter diving events. She went on to become the program's first-ever four-year All-American after placing 10th in the 1-meter dive at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Joel Rollings is back for his 11th year as head coach of both the men's and women's programs. Under Rollings' leadership, UW-Whitewater has set 49 school records and earned 22 individual conference titles and 12 All-America honors, including two national individual championships.
Following this weekend's All-Wisconsin Invite, the Warhawks host Carroll on Nov. 4 at the Williams Center. The team opens against WIAC competition Nov. 12 at UW-Oshkosh, then continues in conference one week later at home against defending league champion UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Whitewater resumes action Dec. 2-3 at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational, then heads to Puerto Rico in early January for its annual training trip.
The Warhawks visit Lake Forest (Ill.) for a tri-meet on Jan. 21 and UW-Eau Claire for a dual meet on Jan. 28. The team hosts UW-La Crosse on Feb. 4 for its last meet of the regular season.
The WIAC Championships are scheduled for Feb. 16-18 at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis., the site of this weekend's season-opening invitational.
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) and
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) lead the team's talented senior class.
Arteaga is a three-time WIAC champion, including a two-time winner of the 400-yard individual medley last season. She also placed third in the 200-yard backstroke and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley, and was part of the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay team.
Lotzer garnered second team All-WIAC accolades in the 500-yard freestyle, and finished third in the 1,650-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle. She was also part of the third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team.
Gabby Swider (Milwaukee/St. Thomas More) finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly, and was a member of the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
McKenzie Asplund (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) placed eighth in both the 400-yard individual medley and the 1,650-yard freestyle at last year's WIAC Championships, while
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton) was part of the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) and
Stephanie Haebig (Grafton/Grafton) highlight the team's junior class.
An All-American in two events as a freshman in 2015, Matthys is a four-time WIAC champion, including twice in the 100-yard butterfly. Last season, she also finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke and was a part of top four finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay.
Haebig was also an All-American in 2015 and had placed among the conference's top eight in backstroke events twice during her career.

Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) is one of nine sophomores on the roster. She earned second team all-conference honors in the 400-yard individual medley and was third in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. Hawker was also a member of the third-place 800-yard freestyle relay and the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay.
Jessica James (Oswego, Ill./East) finished among the top five in the league in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, and is the school's current record holder in the 100.
Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly and seventh in the 200-yard butterfly.
Emily Champa (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) earned a spot on the 1,650-yard freestyle podium at last season's championship meet with a seventh-place finish.
Vada Williams (La Crescent, Minn./Holmen-Aquinas-Onalaska (Wis.)) finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle and was a part of four top-four relays, including the third-place 200-yard medley relay team.
