The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball was dominant over the final half of the second set and in the entire third set Friday night en route to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-12 victory over Coe (Iowa) in a non-conference match at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
The Warhawks (19-5 overall) won their fourth straight contest on the strength of their serve, compiling seven aces while holding the Kohawks to a .031 hitting percentage.
Senior outside hitter
Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) compiled a team-best 10 kills and equaled a team high with nine digs to go along with two service aces. Junior middle hitter
Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) tallied eight kills and two blocks, and freshman middle hitter
Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) posted seven kills and a team-high three blocks.
Freshman outside hitter
Alexandra Bialo (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) tallied seven kills, and senior setter
Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) registered four kills, 27 assists, eight digs and two blocks.
Freshman defensive specialist
Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) matched Pfeifer with nine digs, and sophomore libero
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) equaled Hasler with eight digs and added two aces.
In the first set, Coe (17-9) took two timeouts less than 15 points into the match as UW-Whitewater jumped out to an 11-3 advantage behind the serves of Pfeifer and freshman middle hitter
Samantha Kavajecz (Roscoe, Ill./Rockton Hononegah).
The Kohawks ran off seven straight points midway through the frame to take a 16-15 lead, but the Warhawks responded by recording 10 of the last 14 points in the set.
Coe led 10-7 early in the second set before UW-Whitewater went on a 5-0 run, including two kills by Doll, to take a 12-10 advantage. The Warhawks didn't surrendered the lead the rest of the way, ending the period on a 7-0 run behind Robinson's serve.
UW-Whitewater never trailed in the third, building a 13-5 advantage and cruising the rest of the way.
As part of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's "Play For A Cause" initiative, the Warhawks teamed up with the UW-Whitewater baseball team to support Justin Wegner, a catcher on the baseball team who is undergoing procedures to treat a rare form of cancer. Wegner was diagnosed in June with soft tissue sarcoma. Wrist bands for a minimum donation of $5 were sold on his behalf with all proceeds benefitting Wegner's family for cost of treatment.
UW-Whitewater returns to WIAC play Wednesday at UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
