Box Score Related Links:Box Score Menomonie, Wis. - No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team won its seventh straight contest Wednesday night, defeating UW-Stout 75-59 in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Warhawks (10-2, 1-0 WIAC) held a four point lead after one period of play, but pulled away with strong defense, solid rebounding, and timely transition baskets in the second half.
UW-Whitewater shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor while holding UW-Stout (4-7, 0-1) to 39.7 percent. The Warhawks knocked down five second half 3-pointers and grabbed 35 rebounds on the night.
Junior guard
Haki Stampley (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) led all scorers with a season-high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Senior wing
Trinson White (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) contributed a double-double with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 13 rebounds in 35 minutes.
Junior forward
Cole Van Schyndel (Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown) and sophomore guard
Jerry Ngobi (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) both finished in double figures for the Warhawks. Van Schyndel tallied 11 points and four rebounds, while Ngobi posted 14 points and four assists.
In the first half, the Warhawks shot 48.2 percent from the floor to hold a 31-27 advantage heading into halftime.
After the game was tied at 22-22 with just five minutes left in the period, UW-Whitewater took the lead at the 5:17 mark on a layup by White, and didn't relinquish its lead the rest of the way.
In the second half, the Warhawks forced six turnovers which helped them out score the Blue Devils by 12 in the period.
UW-Whitewater will be back in action Saturday Jan. 9th where they will take on defending national champion UW-Stevens Point in the Kachel Gymnasium with the tip-off set for 7 p.m.
