Warhawks Lose Overtime Thriller

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell in overtime 78-75 to UW-Platteville Wednesday night in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Kachel Gymnasium. 
 
The loss marks UW-Whitewater's first against UW-Platteville at home since 2008. The Warhawks' record drops to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
 
The Warhawks were led by three players scoring in double digits. Senior forward Trinson White (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Haki Stampley (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton), who hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the waning moments of regulation, was right behind White with 19 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) dropped in 10 points.
 
The Pioneers (10-8, 4-3 WIAC), the nation's No. 2 free throw shooting team entering play, hit 16-of-17 from the line, including 6-of-6 in overtime, to put away UW-Whitewater.
 
The game featured 14 ties and 11 lead changes.
 
White and sophomore guard Jerry Ngobi (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) scored six of UW-Whitewater's nine points as each team traded baskets heading into the first media timeout. UW-Platteville lead 11-9 with 14:43 to go in the first half.
 
Junior guard Drew Bryson (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) gave the Warhawks the lead 12-11 with a reverse layup and converting the foul shot at the free throw line. UW-Platteville took the lead back 14-12 on the ensuing possession with a 3-pointer at the other end. Brown tied the game at 14 by going coast-to-coast for a layup. UW-Platteville converted two consecutive baskets to give itself a 21-19 lead with 7:28 left in the first half. 
 
A Brown jumper and White layup on back-to-back possessions helped the Warhawks tie the game back up at 23. Brown gave UW-Whitewater the 26-25 lead by making one of two free throws. UW-Platteville had an answer again as it took the lead 27-26 with 5:01 to go in the half.
 
Both teams continued to trade baskets as UW-Platteville led UW-Whitewater 41-35 heading into halftime.
 
UW-Platteville started off the second half by knocking down a 3-pointer. Junior forward Cole Van Schyndel (Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown) got the Warhawks' first two points of the second half by making two free throws. UW-Platteville recorded a 9-4 run to take a 50-39 lead with 15:56 remaining in the second half.
 
Stampley kept the Warhawks within striking distance by making a jumper and a layup on consecutive Warhawk possessions. UW-Platteville still held a 52-46 lead with 14:06 to go in the second half.
 
Brown, White and Stampley helped UW-Whitewater go on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 56. A jumper by freshman guard/forward Mitchell Pfeifer (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) gave UW-Whitewater the lead at 58-56. UW-Platteville converted on the next possession to tie the game at 58 heading into the media timeout with 7:17 to go in the game. 
 
UW-Platteville held a 62-61 lead as White matched the Pioneers score for score with a jumper and a free throw on consecutive possessions. After a layup by UW-Platteville to take the lead 64-61, Stampley drove to the basket and made a layup and keep UW-Whitewater within one point with 39 seconds left in regulation.
 
After UW-Platteville made two free throws to take the lead 66-63, Stampley hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to tie the game at 66 and send the game into overtime.
 
UW-Whitewater started overtime play by taking a 67-66 lead on a Ngobi free throw. UW-Platteville countered back by scoring jumper and making two of two free throws to take a 70-67 lead.
 
After a Ngobi layup to cut the UW-Platteville lead to 76-73, Stampley made both free throw attempts with 14 seconds left in overtime keep UW-Whitewater with one as the score was 76-75. UW-Platteville made two more free throws to take a 78-75 lead.
 
With 4.9 seconds left in overtime, Stampley drove down the court and took the last shot for the Warhawks. His 3-point attempt hit off the rim.
 
UW-Whitewater continues conference play at first-place UW-River Falls Saturday at 5 p.m.
