Men’s Hoops This Week: Warhawks Hit Midway Point of WIAC Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team hosts its oldest rival and visits the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's first-place team this week.
 
The Warhawks (12-5 overall, 3-3 WIAC) host UW-Platteville Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium. As part of the game's festivities, UW-Whitewater's 21 male All-Americans from all sports during the winter 2014-15, spring 2015 and fall 2015 seasons will be recognized during a halftime ceremony.
 
On Saturday, UW-Whitewater visits first-place UW-River Falls. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.

The Warhawks are receiving 14 votes in the latest D3hoops.com Men's Top 25. UW-Whitewater is the lone team out of the WIAC to appear in the poll. The Warhawks were ranked as high as 14th before seeing its eight-game win streak snapped back on Jan. 13.
 
Last Week
 
UW-Whitewater started last week with a signature 66-60 victory at UW-Oshkosh. Trailing by 10 at halftime and by 11 with 15:28 to play, the team rallied behind a combined 21 second-half points from senior forward Trinson White (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) and senior guard Haki Stampley (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton). The Warhawks shot 54.5 percent in the second half and hit 16-of-21 from the free-throw line for the game.
 
On Saturday, UW-Whitewater shot 40.7 percent from the floor, its second-lowest output of the season, and allowed 50.0 percent shooting on the other end in a 66-63 setback against UW-Eau Claire. Stampley posted his first double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jerry Ngobi (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) tallied 14 points. Freshman guard Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) added 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
 
This Week
 
The Warhawks renew their oldest rivalry against UW-Platteville (9-8, 3-3). UW-Whitewater trails 104-102 in the all time series, but has won the last nine meetings between the two teams.
 
The Pioneers enter the week on a three-game win streak, including a 72-61 triumph over first-place UW-River Falls last Satuday.
 
UW-Platteville leads the WIAC and ranks second in the nation in free-throw percentage (79.7). It ranks fourth in the league in scoring offense (70.4 ppg) and eighth in scoring defense (72.0).
 
Boston Johnson leads the Pioneers in both scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). He leads the WIAC in minutes per game (36.0). Cory Vaassen averages 12.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest, and is shooting 47.1 percent from the field.
 
UW-River Falls (11-6, 5-1) saw its six-game win streak snapped over the weekend, falling 72-61 at UW-Platteville. It remains in first place in the conference, one game ahead of UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse.
 
The Falcons lead the WIAC in assists per game (13.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.09-to-1), and ranks third in the league in scoring offense (72.2 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (71.2 ppg).
 
Jon Christensen leads the conference in scoring at 19.5 points per game and ranks second in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game. He also shoots 51.3 percent from the floor, good for third in the league.  Garret Pearson ranks fourth in the WIAC with 14.9 points per affair.
 
In UW-Whitewater's first meeting of the season against UW-La Crosse, the Falcons shot 57.1 percent in the second half and committed just two turnovers for the game and the Warhawks allowed a 10-point halftime lead to slip away in a 75-70 setback on Jan. 13 at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
Van Schyndel led UW-Whitewater with 20 points in the contest.
