Related Links:Box Score Eau Claire, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team took on UW-Eau Claire on Saturday night. The Warhawks defeated the Bluegolds in a thriller by a score of 54-52 and move to (14-3 overall, 3-3 WIAC) on the season.
The 12th ranked Warhawks outrebounded UW-Eau Claire (8-9 overall, 3-3 WIAC) by a 49-42 margin, including an impressive 17-6 edge on the offensive glass. UW-Whitewater also forced the Bluegolds to commit 16 turnovers.
Despite shooting just 26.5 percent from the field on 18-of-68 attempts the Warhawks defense held UW-Eau Claire to 31.4 percent shooting from the floor.
Three players scored between nine and 16 points for the Warhawks. Sophomore
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater) tallied 16 points on 5-11 shooting from the field and 11 rebounds. Senior forward
Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) recorded nine points on 4-11 shooting from the field in 33 minutes.
Junior guard
Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) posted nine points on 4-12 shooting. Sophomore
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Senior
Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) each recorded six points on the night, Smith also grabbed six rebounds.
After jumping out to a fast start UW-Whitewater held a 17-7 lead after one period of play. The Warhawks went cold in the second period scoring just eight points in the period. The Bluegolds outscored UW-Whitewater by a 19-8 margin in the second quarter.
The second half was very tightly contested going back and forth for two periods. The third quarter finished in a tie at 16-16 for the period. The Warhawks outscored UW-Eau Claire in the final frame by a score of 13-10 to seal the victory.
UW-Whitewater will be back in action next Wednesday Jan. 27th where they will take on UW-Platteville in the Kachel Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
