Related Links:Box Score La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team built a double-digit lead in the second half Saturday night, but was unable to hold on in a 72-70 overtime thriller against UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
The Warhawks (11-4 overall, 2-2 WIAC), shot 45.8 percent from the field on 27-of-59 attempts. UW-Whitewater held UW-La Crosse (9-6 overall, 3-1 WIAC) to 40.8 percent on 29-of-71 shooting from the floor.
Senior guard
Trinson White (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) led UW-Whitewater with 23 points to go along with 18 rebounds, while junior forward
Cole Van Schyndel (Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown) collected 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Haki Stampley (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) tallied 12 points and five rebounds.
Freshman guard
Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) added nine points, two assists and one rebound.
The Eagles committed just nine turnovers for the game and held a 17-10 edge in points off miscues.
A 3-pointer by sophomore guard
Jerry Ngobi (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) pushed the Warhawks' to their first lead of the first half 24-21 at the 4:45 mark. UW-Whitewater upped its advantage to ten points at 35-25 with 38 seconds on the clock before a lay-up by UW-La Crosse cut the lead to eight going into the half.
UW-Whitewater led for a majority of the second half, but the Eagles continued to chip away at its deficit and finally got to within six points at 63-57 with just under two minutes to play.
The Eagles then went on a 7-1 run to close out the half and force overtime.
In the five minute overtime period the Warhawks were outscored 8-6. White scored all six points for UW-Whitewater but came up just short as UW-La Crosse knocked down two free-throws in the final seconds of the period.
The Warhawks resume WIAC play next Wednesday at UW-Oshkosh. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
