WHITEWATER – The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team jumped out to a quick lead Sunday, but was unable to sustain the advantage in a 15-7 setback against UW-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (33-9) now seek an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins Wednesday, May 13. The field will be announced Sunday via a press release to be posted to NCAA.com at 11 p.m. Central Time.

UW-Whitewater left 12 runners on base in the contest, and the Pointers (31-12) tallied all 15 of their runs over the final five innings after the Warhawks had jumped out to a five-run lead.

Senior shortstop Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) and senior centerfielder Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) finished with three hits apiece to lead UW-Whitewater, which totaled 14 hits for the afternoon.

UW-Stevens Point recorded 14 hits and drew 11 walks.

Senior second baseman Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) and senior left fielder Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) each registered two hits.

In the first, the Warhawks plated four runs before an out was recorded. After a base hit by Kuhlmann and a walk by Cannon, Pierce and senior first baseman Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) knocked back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0.

After a balk plated Cannon from third, sophomore third baseman Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, IL/Guilford) reached with a single up the middle to put runners at the corners. Bryden gave UW-Whitewater a four-run lead with a sharp base hit through the right side.

After consecutive errors helped the Warhawks increase their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth, UW-Stevens Point responded with five in the top of the fifth to tie the game. The Pointers tallied all five runs with two outs in the frame.

UW-Whitewater took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth as Kuhlmann doubled home a run and Cannon singled in another, both with two outs.

UW-Stevens Point tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth to start a stretch of 10 unanswered runs in the final four innings.

The Warhawks have qualified for the last seven NCAA Tournaments, making trips to the NCAA Division III World Series in 2008, 2011 and 2014 over that span. UW-Whitewater is the defending national champion.
