DuCharme's Three Homers Bolster Warhawk Sweep

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Senior outfielder Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson) registered a hat trick going yard three times in the Warhawks doubleheader in Stevens Point to bolster UW-Whitewater's sweep of the Pointers 7-2 and 7-0 Wednesday. The Warhawks, ranked eleventh in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, improved to 17-3 this season and remains unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 6-0.

The teams combined for five homeruns in the opener Wednesday. Senior righthander Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) gave up just two hits in seven innings on the mound but one found its way out of the park with a runner on in the bottom of the third to give UW-Stevens Point a 2-0 lead.

The Warhawks cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth with the first of DuCharme's three round-trippers, this one straight out to center field.

In the top of the sixth, a controversial double play cleared the bases for senior Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) with two outs. Sporer tagged a ball to left field that cleared the fence, the third homerun of the game, to tie the score 2-2.

UW-Whitewater's bats heated up and the Warhawk hitters carried the momentum through the lineup in the top of the seventh. Senior catcher Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) drew a one-out walk. With two outs, sophomore third baseman Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) notched a hard liner to left field for a single. Freshman outfield Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) followed suit swinging away from the left side of the plate for another single to left to bring in one run and give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead. DuCharme came up cluth with her second four-bagger of the game this time a three-run homer over the left field fence. Senior Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot to right field in the next at bat to score the fifth run of the inning for UW-Whitewater and give the Warhawks a 7-2 cushion.

Houda sat the Pointers down in order to seal the win. The righty allowed just one base runner, on a walk, after the homerun in the bottom of the third recording three 1-2-3 innings.

DuCharme went 2-for-3 with two homeruns, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Houda went the distance allowing just two hits while striking out four to improve to 8-2 this season.

Game Two Recap
The Warhawks got the offense going early in the nightcap. Klotz opened the game with a leadoff single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. DuCharme put the pressure on the defense showcasing her speed instead of her power with an infield hit that forced an error by the Pointers allowing Klotz to touch home for a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, Klotz opened the third with a single to third base. The freshman speedster stole second. Jablonski drew a walk and Klotz advanced to third on the fourth ball that hit the dirt and went by the catcher to put runners on the corners. A perfectly executed pickle steal by Jablonski at third gave Klotz ample time to score for the second time in the game and a throwing error put Jablonski on second. Sporer's single to center field scored Jablsonki and gave the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.

UW-Whitewater added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Sophomore designated player Haley Morelli (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced all the way to third courtesy of two wild pitches. Klotz continued her stellar game at the plate with an RBI single down the right field line.

In the top of the seventh, DuCharme put the finishing touches on a career day at the plate with a two-run shot that easily cleared the fence in left field for her third homerun of the day. Senior Caitlin Snyder (Burlington/Catholic Central) came in to pinch hit and hit a laser into the gap in left center for a double. Sophomore Cara Smoczynski (Aurora, IL/Rosary) took over at second for Snyder, moved to third on a ground ball and scored after the throw to third skirted away from the third baseman to give UW-Whitewater a 7-0 lead.

Sporer moved from the outfield to the mound after the first game picking up the complete game win on the mound with seven strikeouts. The righty issued just one walk and scatted four hits over seven innings of work to improve to 7-1.

Klotz led UW-Whitewater offensively with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Warhawks will host UW-Superior and UW-Eau Claire for a four-game home stand over the weekend. The Yellowjackets will visit van Steenderen Field Saturday and UW-Whitewater will face the Blugolds Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 12 p.m. starts.
