Warhawks Remain Unbeaten in WIAC with Sweep of Yellowjackets

The UW-Whitewater softball team, ranked eleventh according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, remained unbeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a sweep of UW-Superior Saturday afternoon. The Warhawks won 10-2 in a shortened six-inning game in the opener and a 6-0 shutout in the nightcap. UW-Whitewater improves to 19-3 overall and 8-0 in league play with the two wins.

The Yellowjackets struck first taking advantage of two Warhawk miscues to plate one run in the top of the first frame.

Freshman Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) set the tone right off the bat in the bottom of the inning with a triple over the right fielder's head. Senior Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson) played follow-the-leader and tagged a sky ball that went off the fence in right field to knot the score 1-1. Continuing the trend, senior Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) hustled out a double to short right field for the RBI and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton).

Sophomore Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) hit a first pitch rocket through the right side and into right field to bring in another run and junior Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) followed suit with another single, this time through the left side. Senior Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) loaded the bases drawing a seven-pitch walk.

Sophomore designated player brought in the Warhawks' fourth run of the inning with a grounder to second before UW-Superior was able to get out of the inning.

Senior hurler Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) sat the Yellowjackets down in order courtesy of two strikeouts and a groundout to bring the Warhawk offense back to the plate.

Klotz singled up the middle, stole second and scored on a Sporer flare to short centerfield to give UW-Whitewater a 5-1 lead.

After a quick top of the third, Hansen tagged a liner that cleared the fence in left center for her second homerun of the season. Evangelista followed with a rocket up the middle. Morelli's first-pitch gapper to right center went into the books as a double but the Warhawks were stranded in scoring position after a double play on a nice catch by Superior's centerfielder.

Superior cut the margin to 6-2 with a solo shot to centerfield in the top of the fifth. Klotz was busy in left recording all three outs in the inning after the homer to bring UW-Whitewater back to the plate.

Evangelista answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of her own, her fourth of the season, straight out to centerfield to give the Warhawks a 7-2 lead.

UW-Superior put runners on the corners with no outs in the top of the sixth but the Warhawks got out of the jam to maintain the five-run lead.

Klotz got the Warhawks going in the bottom of the inning with a hot shot up the middle for a single. DuCharme followed with a liner that landed just inside the line in right field for a stand-up double. The Yellowjackets opted to intentionally walk Jablonski to load the bases with no outs for Sporer.

Sporer took advantage of the bases loaded situation with a single just inside third base that brought in two runs. Hansen ended the game early via the run-rule with a single through the right side that plated pinch runner Courtney Smith (St. Charles, IL/North) from second base.

The Warhawks rattled off 16 hits in the game led by three hit performances from Klotz and Hansen. DuCharme, Sporer, Ricci and Evangelista each notched two hits in the game.

Houda went the distance to improve to 9-2 this season allowing just four hits while striking out six.

 Game Two Recap
After two scoreless innings, Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) led off the inning with a flare to centerfield for a single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Klotz. DuCharme tagged a line drive that went off the pitcher's glove and fell in for a single to put runners on the corners. Jablonski's fly ball to left field gave Taylor enough time to tag from third and slide in safely for a 1-0 lead after three innings.

Freshman Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) hit a fly ball down the right field line that went off the right fielder's glove and allowed Swanson to make it all the way to third with one out but the Warhawks were not able to get her in to keep the score 1-0.

Taylor led off the bottom of the fifth with a rocket to centerfield and slid in safely to second for a double. After a flyout, DuCharme legged out an infield single to put two runners on with one out. Jablonski drew the walk to load the bases for Sporer.

Sporer watched four in a row sail by for the RBI base on balls giving the Warhawks a 2-0 lead. With two outs and a 3-1 count for Swanson, the Yellowjackets made a change in the circle brining the first game starter back to the mound.  The first pitch came in for a strike on the outside corner to bring the count to full. Swanson got ahold of the next pitch sending it into right field on a line for a single. Some confusion on the base paths plated one runner but forced a pickle in between third and home. Jablonski waited for the catcher to throw back to third, changed directions and headed for home. Taking an inside path toward home, she slid in safely under the tag to give UW-Whitewater a 4-0 lead.

The Warhawks added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor notched a one out single up the middle followed by a two-run rocket that got up and out of the park quick off of DuCharme's bat, her fourth homer in as many games, to extend the lead to 6-0.

In the top of the seventh, a leadoff single put a runner on but Swanson snagged a line drive in the next at bat and nearly doubled the runner off at first. A bunt was popped up to Sporer who made a nice catch and fired to first to secure the double play and the win.

DuCharme and Taylor combined to go 6-for-7 from the batter's box with two runs batted in and five runs scored.

Sporer improved to 8-1 in the circle tossing a complete game three-hitter while striking out six. Houda and Sporer did not issue a single walk in the doubleheader.

UW-Whitewater remains at home for a twinbill against UW-Eau Claire Sunday beginning at noon.
