CLERMONT, Fla. - The UW-Whitewater softball team registered a pair of wins Saturday to improve to 3-1 this season. The Warhawks topped Plattsburgh State 5-0 and followed with a 7-4 win over Oberlin College.
Senior
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) threw a complete game two-hitter against Plattsburgh State to improve to 1-1 this season. The righty retired 17 consecutive batters after a leadoff single in the first at bat of the game.
UW-Whitewater's offense provided all the support Houda would need in the top of the third inning. Freshman
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) singled up the middle with one out and stole second. Senior
Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) notched a two-out single to right center to score Klotz and put the Warhawks on the board with a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks added insurance runs in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth respectively. In the fifth, freshman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Klotz. Junior
Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) drew a walk to put two runners on and Jablonski loaded the bases with a single through the left side. A wild pitch scored Swanson and moved the runners. Another Plattsburgh miscue with two outs scored the Warhawks' second run of the inning to give UW-Whitewater a 3-0 lead.
The top of the sixth saw two more sporting purple and black touch home. A one-out error allowed sophomore
Jessica Kaemerer (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) to reach first. Kaemerer stole second and crossed the plate in the next at bat off an error. The Warhawks continued to put the pressure on the Plattsburgh defense forcing three more miscues in the inning. Klotz, who had reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on one of those miscues and scored on another, a wild pitch.
Plattsburgh State's leadoff batter recorded their second hit of the contest in the bottom of the seventh but that was as far as UW-Whitewater would allow the baserunner.
Five Warhawks registered hits in the game led by Jablonski and Swanson each going 2-for-3 from the batter's box. Houda went the distance retiring nine via strikeout.
Oberlin RecapA big fourth inning propelled UW-Whitewater over Oberlin College in the nightcap.
After a scoreless three and a half innings, senior
Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) tagged a leadoff homer that soared over the fence in center field to provide the first score of the game. Senior
Caitlin Snyder (Burlington/Catholic Central) followed with a single to center field and was replaced on the basepaths by senior
Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson). DuCharme registered her third stolen base of the season to move into scoring position. Freshman
Mackenzie Price (Spring Green/River Valley) made it back-to-back-to-back hits for the Warhawks with another single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Head Coach
Brenda Volk put on the squeeze and Swanson laid down a stellar bunt and DuCharme slid under the tag for the Warhawks' second score of the inning.
Klotz followed with another single up the middle to score Price and force an Oberlin pitching change. In the first at bat with a new hurler, Hansen squared for a sacrifice bunt but the throw to first sailed into the outfield. First base coach
Beth Bonuso waved Hansen on to second as the ball skirted away from the right fielder and two more Warhawks crossed the plate. As Hansen rounded second, Volk was already sending her home where she safely touched to give UW-Whitewater a 6-0 lead.
Jablonski kept the inning going with a single up the middle and came around to score on a rocket liner up the middle by
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) for a 7-0 lead.
Oberlin plated three runers in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh but the Warhawk defense held on to secure the 7-4 win.
Sophomore
Cara Smoczynski (Aurora, IL/Rosary) picked up her first win on the mound in her first appearance this season. The righty tossed 5.0 innings allowing two hits while striking out four without issuing a walk.
Kara Tadda (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) and
Stephanie Waller (Oak Lawn, IL/Richards) came in to close for UW-Whitewater and seal the game.
Eighteen Warhawks entered the scorebook in the game with seven recording hits. Sporer went 2-for-3 from the plate and Jablonski added another two-hit performance.
UW-Whitewater continues play in the National Training Center Spring Games with a twinbill Sunday. The Warhawks take on Wellesley at 9 Eastern followed by region opponent Elmhurst at 11.
