Softball Splits, Now 4-2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Warhawk softball team split a pair of games Sunday to move to 4-2 this season. UW-Whitewater fell to Wellesley 8-6 Sunday morning but bounced back with a 7-0 rout of Elmhurst.

Eleven of the fourteen runs in the first game came in the third inning. The teams combined for 22 hits in the game.

After two scoreless innings, Wellesley posted six hits leading to a seven-run top of the third.

With one out in the bottom of the inning, freshman Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) singled to left field. Junior Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) beat out a single to the shortstop to put two runners on. Senior Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) tagged a three-run blast that quickly left the park over the center field fence to put the Warhawks on the board and cut the lead to 7-3. Just two pitches later, sophomore Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) followed suit with her first four-bagger of the season to make it 7-4.

The Blue notched two singles in the next half inning to bring one runner around to score and extend the gap to 8-4.

UW-Whitewater registered two more in the bottom of the fourth, all crossing the plate with two outs. With just one out to work with in the inning, Klotz showed her speed with an infield single. Hansen and Jablonski drew back-to-back walks. Ricci's hard hit to the second baseman resulted in a miscue allowing Klotz and Hansen to touch the plate and cut the margin to 8-6.

The Warhawks had runners on in the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the seventh but were unable to bring them in

Klotz led the Warhawks in the batter's box with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored. Jablonski and Ricci combined for four runs batted in.

Senior righthander Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) suffered her first loss of the season on the mound to move to 1-1.

Elmhurst Recap
The Warhawks produced all the offense they would need in the top of the second to defeat Elmhurst.

Hansen led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North). With two outs, Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) drew a walk and Klotz continued her stellar day at the plate with a bunt single to load the bases.

Senior Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson) singled up the middle to bring in one run. Jablonski and Ricci were issued free passes to bring in two more Warhawks. Sporer hit a liner up the middle for a single that plated two more as UW-Whitewater jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

UW-Whitewater added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. With one out in the inning, DuCharme drew a walk and Jablonski notched her third double this season, this time beating the right fielder to put two runners in scoring position. Ricci hit a rocket that went off the second baseman's glove and shot into right center bringing in DuCharme and Jablonski for the 7-0 lead.

Senior righty Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) improved to 2-1 with a complete game four-hitter striking out six and walking three.

Hansen led UW-Whitewater in the batter's box going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Warhawks have off Monday and return to the dirt with games at 9:00 and 11:00 Eastern against Carthage and Buffalo State respectively.
