Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team battled the University of Dubuque for 110 minutes in windy and cold conditions Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, and came away with a 2-2 double overtime tie.

The Warhawks dominated possession for the first 25 minutes of the game, playing with the wind.  Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) notched his first goal of the season, and in a Warhawk uniform, in the 21st minute on a corner by Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).  The 6-7 Stanko rose above the bunch and headed it past the keeper for a 1-0 UW-Whitewater lead.

Kody Mjelde (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) used his head to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute.  After a Spartan foul, John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took a free kick and sent it into the box where Mjelde connected for his first goal of 2014.

The start of the second half got a little physical.  In the first 10 minutes the Warhawks were whistled for four fouls and the Spartans for three. That trend continued throughout the game and eight yellow cards were issues between the two teams. In fact, a foul against Whitewater in the box led to Dubuque's first goal. The Spartans were awarded a penalty kick and scored to make it 2-1 with 21:33 left in the game.

Three and a half minutes later the game was all-square when Dubuque headed one in past relief goalkeeper Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford).

The Warhawks had opportunities in the final minutes of regulation but were unable to find the back of the net and the two teams headed to overtime.

Gottwald, who had the best opportunity in both overtime periods, ripped an amazing free kick at 96:30, but Dubuque goalkeeper Riley Jensen made an incredible diving save to preserve the tie.  Buchman did his job at the other end making two saves in the final three minutes of play.

UW-Whitewater outshot Dubuque 26-16 in the game and earned 17 corner kicks to the Spartans' 5.  There were a total of 35 fouls called in the match.  The Warhawk goalkeepers, Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and Buchman, combined to make eight saves in the game.

This is the eighth time these two teams have played, and the first time they have played to a tie.  The Warhawks hold an advantage in the all-time series 6-1-1.

UW-Whitewater (2-1-1) will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. on Saturday for their next game.  The Warhawks will take on the Raiders of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a match beginning at 3:30 pm.
