Warhawks Open Season with Win

Box Score LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. - The Warhawk baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 5-1 win over Oglethorp in the Russmatt Invitational.

Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) led UW-Whitewater in their first competition of the season with a 3x4 performance from the plate with an RBI. Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest), Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) and Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) added two hits apiece for UW-W as the Warhawks tallied 11 hits in the game.

Whitewater got on the board right away with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) started things with a one out single to second base and advanced to second with the first stolen base of the season. A walk and groundout pushed Fon to third and Gonzalez notched the RBI with a two-out single to third base to give Whitewater the lead. 

Oglethorp would knot the game 1-1 off a solo shot over the right field fence in the top of the fourth.

The Warhawk bats heated up and Whitewater plated a run in the bottom of the inning and added three more to seal the game in the bottom of the fifth. 

Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) picked up the win on the mound for UW-W registering 11 strikeouts without allowing a walk in seven innings of work. OU's Ryan Brennan falls to 1-3 after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings. 

UW-W will continue play in the Russmatt Invitational in Florida Thursday with a doubleheader against Benedictine beginning at 10 am.
