Warhawks’ Late Push Comes Up Short

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team whittled an 11-point halftime deficit down to one possession late in the second half Monday, but fell just short in a 65-57 setback against Dubuque (Iowa) in a non-conference affair at JustAgame Fieldhouse.

After a 3-point play and a 3-pointer by junior guard Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central), the Warhawks (4-6 overall) drew to within 58-55 with just under three minutes to play after trailing by as many as 16 points in the period.

The Spartans (5-4) sandwiched lay-ups around a UW-Whitewater turnover to take a 62-55 advantage with just under a minute to play.

Following a lay-up by freshman guard Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater), Dubuque knocked down a pair of free throws to ice the contest with 22 seconds left.

The Warhawks outrebounded the Spartans 50-33, including a 23-12 margin on the offensive glass, but UW-Whitewater was held to a season-low 31.7 percent shooting from the floor, including 25.7 percent in the first half.

Reeves led the Warhawks with a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. Trewyn tallied 14 points, while junior forward Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

Junior wing Maddie Bare (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) added seven points and six rebounds off the bench.

UW-Whitewater took its first and only lead of the game, 2-0, at the 18:38 mark of the first half on a bucket by Reeves. From there, Dubuque went on a 14-3 run to take a nine-point lead with 14:46 on the clock.

Bare brought the Warhawks to within three with 12:56 left in the half, but the Spartans used another spurt to take a 27-15 advantage with just over six minutes on the clock.

UW-Whitewater cut its deficit in half by the 4:46 mark, but Dubuque held a 36-25 advantage heading into the locker room.

The Warhawks trailed by two or more possessions for the first 17 minutes of the second half before nearly coming all the way back in the waning moments.

UW-Whitewater knocked down eight 3-pointers, but were outscored 40-16 in the paint.

The Warhawks conclude play in Wisconsin Dells tomorrow against Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) at 1:30 p.m.
