Turnovers, Hot Shooting Fuel UW-Whitewater in Victory

Box Score WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team combined ferocious, full-court defense with white-hot 3-point shooting early in the second half Tuesday to defeat Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) 71-45 in a non-conference affair at JustAgame Fieldhouse.
 
Freshman guard Brook Trewyn unofficially led the Warhawks (5-6 overall) in scoring with 16 points, including five 3-pointers.
 
UW-Whitewater forced several first-half turnovers by the Vikings (1-9) and knocked down a barrage of 3-pointers early in the second half to put the game out of reach.
 
In the first half, the Warhawks sprinted out to a 7-2 advantage with 16:44 to play in the period behind consecutive jumpers by Reeves to start the contest.
 
After back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore guard Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and sophomore guard Kelsey Frey (Oak Creek/Wisconsin Lutheran), UW-Whitewater led 13-6 with 12:30 on the clock before increasing its lead to nine by the 10:23 mark following a Reeves 3-pointer.
 
The Warhawks continued to increase their lead behind their relentless full-court defensive press, taking their first double digit advantage at 24-13 with 4:07 left after two straight lay-ups by junior wing Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville).
 
UW-Whitewater ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 32-15 lead, its largest of the game to that point, into the locker room. Trewyn fueled the spurt with four points on a 3-pointer and a free throw.
 
The Warhawks began the second half the same way they started the first.
 
Behind four 3-pointers from Trewyn in the first four minutes of the period, UW-Whitewater opened the half with a 14-2 run to lead 46-17 with 16:40 on the clock.
 
The Warhawks took their largest advantage of the contest at 56-23 following a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Andrea Olsen (East Troy/East Troy) with 12:11 to play.

The Warhawks resume Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play for the remainder of the regular season this Saturday at home against UW-River Falls. Tip-off for Alumni Day at Kachel Gymnasium is slated for 3 p.m.
