Warhawks Outlasted at Augustana in Instant Classic

The No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half Wednesday but was unable to complete its comeback, falling 96-94 in double overtime at fourth-ranked Augustana in a non-conference showdown at Rock Island, Ill.

The Warhawks (6-2 overall) had chances to take the lead late in regulation and the first overtime and shot over 50 percent from the field.

The Vikings (7-1) knocked down 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from 3-point range and made 22-of-29 (75.9 percent) at the free throw line.

Trailing by 11 with 7:40 left in regulation, UW-Whitewater embarked on a 17-3 run, highlighted by eighth straight points from senior guard Quardell Young (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) and capped by a jumper by sophomore guard Drew Bryson (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) with 2:33 on the clock.

After a pair of Augustana free throws with 39 seconds left, Young made 1-of-2 at the free throw line, and the Vikings tied the game on the next possession. Young had a look at a 3-pointer in the waning moments but the shot hit off the back iron.

The Warhawks jumped out to a three-point lead just over a minute and a half into overtime after a 3-pointer by junior guard Xzavier Moananu (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South) and a jumper by junior forward Ron Patten (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay).

Senior wing KJ Evans (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) gave UW-Whitewater a two-point lead on a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, but the Vikings tied the contest at 84-84 with 12 seconds to go. Evans missed a jumper at the buzzer to end the first overtime.

Augustana led for all but 18 seconds of the second overtime. The Warhawks were within a possession until the 28-second mark, when the Vikings took a five-point lead on a pair of free throws.

Evans got UW-Whitewater to within two on a dunk with just over a second to play, but Augustana inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to hang on for a victory.

Young and Evans led the Warhawks with 22 points apiece. Young dished out a team-best six assists, while Evans grabbed seven rebounds.

Patten registered his first double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Cody Odegaard (Poynette, Wis./Poynette) added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while senior forward Steve Egan (Omro, Wis./Omro) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

In the first half, both teams led by as many as six, but neither team posted a lead of more than two possessions. The Vikings held a 33-30 lead heading into the locker room.

UW-Whitewater held a 20-11 advantage in second-chance points, while its bench outscored Augustana reserves 22-14.
