The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team, ranked third in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, topped Monmouth College (Ill.) in the second game of the UW-Whitewater Holiday Tournament in Kachel Gym Friday night. Kalamazoo College defeated UW-River Falls 63-60 in the first game of the evening.
The Warhawks shot 42.9% from the floor making 27-63 field goals including 9-19 from three-point range. Monmouth went 21-61 from the field, a percentage of 34.4, and dropped in four of their 19 shots from behind the arc.
The Scots jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead bolstered by six points from Andrew Mathison. UW-Whitewater responded with a 23-7 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 25-18 lead with 6:03 left on the clock.Â
The teams traded small runs the rest of the way with the Warhawks holding a seven point advantage, 31-24, at the half.Â
UW-Whitewater quickly extended its lead into double figures with the first five points of the second half after
Quardell Young (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) hit a layup and
Xzavier Moananu (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South) knocked down a jumper from downtown to make the score 36-24.Â
An old fashioned three-point play by Monmouth's Will Jones cut the lead to nine with 17:11 but that was the last time the Scots would come to within single digits.Â
The Warhawks continued to add to the lead throughout the second half leading to the final, 74-54.Â
UW-Whitewater outscored the Scots 9-2 on second chance points in the second half. The Warhawks shot 47.1% in the final half of the game. Monmouth was more efficient from the field shooting 41.4% in the half.Â
Young led all scorers with 17 points on 7-13 from the floor and 3-4 from long range and added four assists, a block and a steal..
KJ Evans (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) added 15 points and eight rebounds in the game. He is just five points away from eclipsing the 1,000 milestone.
Steve Egan (Omro, Wis./Omro) dropped in 10 points for the Warhawks.Â
UW-Whitewater will face Kalamazoo College Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Kachel Gym. UW-River Falls and Monmouth will meet in the first game of the night Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
