Warhawks Down Alma at Palace of Auburn Hills

Box Score The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort Wednesday to defeat Alma (Mich.) 84-71 in a non-conference game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, the home of the NBA's Detroit Pistons, in Auburn Hills, Mich.
 
Senior wing KJ Evans (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) posted his first double-double of the season and 12th of his career with 20 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs, to lead the Warhawks (4-1 overall), who shot 51.7 percent from the field and 17-of-24 at the free throw line.
 
Senior forward Steve Egan (Omro, Wis./Omro) and junior forward Ron Patten (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay) tallied 14 points and four rebounds apiece, while senior guard Quardell Young (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) totaled 13 points, six assists and two steals.
 
Senior guard Cody Odegaard (Poynette, Wis./Poynette) added 11 points, while junior wing Xzavier Moananu (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South) contributed off the bench with seven points and six rebounds.
 
UW-Whitewater held a 39-29 advantage in rebounds and held the Scots (0-5) to 33.3 percent shooting from 3-point range.
 
In the first half, the UW-Whitewater jumped out to a 7-2 advantage through the first 2:52 of the contest, and Young gave the team a 10-4 advantage at the 15:53 mark with a 3-pointer.
 
Alma took its first and only lead of the contest with 13:27 to play in the half, but held it for just 38 seconds as Patten embarked on a personal 8-0 run with four straight lay-ups, giving the Warhawks a 19-12 lead with 11:37 on the clock.
 
UW-Whitewater's lead grew to as many as nine and shrunk to as few as two over the course of the final 10 minutes of the period. The team took a 43-36 advantage into the locker room following a pair of free throws by Egan in the final moments.
 
The Warhawks' lead shrunk to two early in the second half, but a 7-0 run pushed it back to nine at 52-43 with 16:00 remaining following a 3-pointer by Odegaard.
 
The Scots got it down to as few as five at the 9:52 mark of the second half, but UW-Whitewater stretched the margin out to double digits over the course of the period. The team's largest lead was 15 points following a lay-up by Young with 2:58 to play.
 
The Warhawks open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, Dec. 3, at UW-Oshkosh. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
