The No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team closed out a 2-0 weekend with a 95-72 triumph over Trinity International (Ill.) on the second day of the Chicago Marriott Naperville Tip-Off Tournament at North Central College.

The Warhawks (3-1 overall), the top team in the nation according to d3hoops.com, shot 59.3 percent from the floor and 12-of-19 from 3-point range. The team also outscored Trinity International 36-22 on points in the paint.

UW-Whitewater also held the Trojans (1-6) to just 41.9 percent shooting to capture its third consecutive win.

Senior guard Quardell Young (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) helped the Warhawks overcome Trinity International's full-court pressure, breaking down the defense for 10 assists against just one turnover in 25 minutes of play.

"Quardell did a great job breaking down their pressure," UW-Whitewater coach Pat Miller said. "They extended defensively and got into passing lanes, and he was able to get into gaps and create opportunities for teammates."

Senior wing KJ Evans (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) totaled game highs of 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Warhawks. Junior wing Xzavier Moananu (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South) and sophomore guard Drew Bryson (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) added 17 points apiece for UW-Whitewater.

Moananu added three steals on the defensive end.

"Xzavier had a great game off the bench," Miller said. "He was efficient offensively, he rebounded well and he brought defensive energy."

Senior guard Cody Odegaard (Poynette, Wis./Poynette) was also in double figures in scoring with 13 points in 13 minutes of action.

Following the conclusion of tournament play, Young and Bryson were selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Warhawks jumped out to a quick start and never let go of their lead, taking an 11-3 lead with 16:25 to play in the first half on the strength of a trio of 3-pointers, including two by Odegaard.

UW-Whitewater extended its lead to 11 points by the 3:22 mark with an 11-3 run. By the end of the half, the Warhawks led 47-32 after a lay-up by Moananu and a 3-pointer by Evans in the final 37 seconds of the frame.

UW-Whitewater led by as many as 25 in the second half as all 16 student-athletes on the roster played at least three minutes in the period. Junior forward Ron Patten (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay) tallied six of his eight points in the second.

"We created great looks and had good ball movement offensively," Miller said. "Our guards were able to create with dribble penetration and hit guys on the other side of the floor."

The Warhawks resume play Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against Alma (Mich.) at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit.
