Warhawks Run Away in Second Half, Down Finlandia

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches Sunday with a 4-0 victory at Finlandia in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference affair in Hancock, Mich.
 
The Warhawks (9-3-3 overall, 1-0-1 WIAC) tallied three goals in the second half to post their win in their last four matches and move to 5-0-2 over their last seven contests.
 
Senior midfielder John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) continued his solid play with two goals to lead UW-Whitewater. Freshman Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and junior Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) combined for the shutout, recording two and three saves, respectively.
 
The Warhawks outshot the Lions (6-7, 0-3) by a 41-8 margin, including a 24-5 advantage in shots on goal. UW-Whitewater held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
 
Freshman forward Robert Jones (Glasgow, Scotland/Uddingston Grammar) scored what held as the game-winning goal in the 10th minute. Jones found the back of the net for the first time in his career on a header, taking a pass from freshman defender Alex Bull (London, England/William Ellis), who earned his first career assist.
 
In the second half, senior midfielder Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) found Gottwald in the 52nd minute for the first of his two goals in the match. It was Montanye's second assist of the year.
 
In the 67th, freshman midfielder Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) deposited his first career goal in the back of the net to give the Warhawks a three-goal advantage. Junior forward Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton) was credited with the assist.
 
Gottwald closed scoring in the 83rd minute with his sixth goal of the season.
 
UW-Whitewater, ranked eighth in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America North Region poll, returns home Saturday at 3 p.m. against the University of Chicago. The match is part of Homecoming Weekend on campus.
