The No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team extended its current winning streak to nine matches Saturday with a 2-1 victory over UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference affair in La Crosse, Wis.
Freshman defender
Nicole Lorenz (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 81st minute for the Warhawks (12-2 overall, 5-0 WIAC), who have now won 26 consecutive conference regular season contests.
Senior goalkeeper
Jordan Myers (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) registered her league-leading 12th win of the season with five saves.
UW-Whitewater totaled four shots, including two on goal, in the first half, and earned four corner kicks. The Eagles (3-4-4, 1-1-2) recorded three shots, including two on net, and had one corner kick chance late in the period.
The Warhawks came out aggressively in the second half, posting three corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of play. On their third try, sophomore forward
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the year to put UW-Whitewater ahead 1-0.
The Warhawks doubled their lead on another corner kick. Lorenz knocked in her third goal of the season on a header with less than nine minutes to play. Sophomore forward
Carina Krausert (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) was credited with her fourth assist on the tally.
UW-La Crosse got on the board in the 86th minute, but UW-Whitewater held off the Eagles' late rally for an equalizer to finish its latest road swing with a 4-0 mark.
The Warhawks, who are ranked 18th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and 24th by D3soccer.com, return home and continue WIAC play Wednesday against UW-Oshkosh. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
