The top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team tallied 21 second-quarter points and recorded its second shutout of the year Saturday in a 37-0 triumph at UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up at Williams Stadium in Menomonie, Wis.

The Warhawks (5-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC), who are ranked No. 1 in the nation by D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association, won their 22nd consecutive contest, tied for the second longest streak in college football.

UW-Whitewater totaled 513 yards and held the Blue Devils (1-4, 0-2) to 242 yards of total offense. The Warhawks forced four UW-Stout turnovers and didn't commit a miscue.

Senior quarterback Matt Behrendt (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) threw for two touchdowns and 303 yards, including 225 in the first half. Senior wide receiver Justin Howard (West Bend/Homestead) posted seven receptions for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown.

Senior wide receiver Jake Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) contributed seven receptions for 113 yards and a score. Junior running back Dennis Moore (Elgin, IL/Elgin) led another balanced rushing attack with 14 carries for 94 yards. Junior running back Jordan Ratliffe (Milwaukee/Milwaukee Vincent) added 13 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Senior defensive back Brady Grayvold (Norway, MI/Norway) led the defense with six tackles and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. Junior linebacker Spencer Jacque (Cedar Grove /Cedar Grove) matched Grayvold with six stops, while junior defensive lineman Zach Franz (DeForest/DeForest Area) and sophomore defensive lineman John Flood (Spring Grove, IL/Richmond-Burton Community) registered three tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, apiece.

Freshman kicker Will Meyer (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) finished 3-of-4 on field goal attempts for the afternoon, finishing one shy of tying a school record for most field goal makes in one game.

The Blue Devils took the opening kickoff and drove into UW-Whitewater territory, but the Warhawks held strong as junior defensive lineman Kevon Clunis (Pleasant Prairie/Kenosha Bradford) and sophomore defensive lineman Ben Threloff (Chicago, IL/St. Rita of Cascia) combined to stop a fourth-and-one rushing attempt.

UW-Whitewater drove inside the UW-Stout 10-yard line thanks to runs by Ratliffe and junior running back Nick Patterson (Sussex/Hamilton) and two receptions by Howard, but were held on fourth-and-two from the 6-yard line.

After empty drives by both teams, Grayvold picked off Blue Devils quarterback Garrett Peterson and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The first score of the contest gave the Warhawks a 7-0 lead with 1:00 on the clock in the first quarter.

UW-Whitewater forced a punt on the ensuing possession, then drove 90 yards in 10 plays, taking a 14-0 lead on a two-yard run by Ratliffe with 10:59 on the clock in the second quarter. Behrendt and Kumerow connected three times for 38 yards on the drive, which spanned just two minutes and 32 seconds.

Following another UW-Stout punt, the Warhawks struck with their longest play of the season from scrimmage. Behrendt found Howard for a 56-yard scoring strike, Howard's second of the season, to give UW-Whitewater a three-touchdown advantage midway through the second quarter.

Grayvold recorded his second interception of the day on the next drive on a pass deep into Warhawks territory.

UW-Whitewater took advantage of the miscue with a nine-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown strike from Behrendt to Kumerow with 1:04 to play in the half.

The Warhawks headed into the locker room with a 28-0 lead.

After a pair of empty possessions to start the second half, Meyer knocked in a 38-yard field goal, his second make of the season, to put UW-Whitewater ahead 31-0 with 7:30 left in the third quarter.

Meyer kicked his second field goal of the affair, this time from 25 yards, on the Warhawks' ensuing offensive possession to make it 34-0 with 1:20 on the clock in the third quarter.

Following a fourth-down stop by UW-Whitewater, the two teams exchanged punts before Meyer converted his third field goal of the game with 3:45 to play in the game. His kick from 27 yards out capped a nine-play, 46-yard drive and accounted for the final margin.

Junior defensive back Shawn Shillcox (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) put the final exclamation point on the victory with an interception, the team's third of the day, after a tipped pass by sophomore defensive back Vince Mason (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest).

The Warhawks continue WIAC road play next Saturday at UW-Eau Claire. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
