PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team, ranked 23rd and 25th nationally, remained unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-1 win over UW-Platteville on the road to improve to 3-0 in the league. Freshman
Nicole Lorenz (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) found the back of the net on a header off of a corner kick from
Sierra High (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) for the game winner in the 75th minute to bring the Warhawks' record to 9-2 this season.
For the second time this season Lorenz scored the game-winning goal with a header off of a corner kick. Just one week ago, Lorenz scored her first collegiate goal against Augustana with a header in the 65th minute to lead the Warhawks to a 1-0 victory.
The first period was relatively even between the two teams. Just 15 seconds into the contest senior goalie
Jordan Myers (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) recorded her first save of the game to keep the Pioneers off the board. At 11:52, UW-Whitewater's
Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) posted her sixth goal of the season after the Warhawks took control of a loose ball at the top of the box.
The keepers kept the game at 1-0 in favor of the Warhawks for the rest of the half as Myers registered two more saves and the UW-Platteville goalie Mandy Taylor posted her first of the game.Â
Five minutes and 23 seconds into the second period, the Pioneers tied the contest with a goal off the foot of Julie Divita, her fourth of the season, on a free kick that deflected into the back of the net. Divita's goal was UW-Platteville's lone shot in the second period.Â
From that point, the Warhawk offense kicked into high gear firing 16 shots in the second period alone. Taylor kept UW-Whitewater off the board until High sent a corner into the box that Lorenz headed past the Pioneer goalie at 74:45 to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead that would hold the rest of the way.Â
UW-Whitewater's offense registered 23 shots including nine on goal in the contest while the defense held the Pioneers to just eight shots, four on goal.
Myers went the distance to improve to 9-2 in goal for the Warhawks.Â
