Warhawks Tie Blazers in Season Opener

Box Score Nine months removed from their memorable 2012 season that saw the UW-Whitewater women's soccer team clinch the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the third year in a row, and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, the Warhawks (0-0-1) opened up 2013 with a 2-2 tie in double overtime against the College of St. Benedict (0-0-1) at Fiskum Field in Whitewater on Saturday.

After falling behind 1-0 in the nineteenth minute on an unassisted goal by Blazer Peggy Renier, the Warhawks pressured the Blazer defense with four shots before breaking through on a goal by Natalie Lechner (Waukesha/Catholic Memorial) to tie the game. Carolyn Nash (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) tallied the assist on the goal.

Tied 1-1 in the second half Colleen Bouchard slipped one past UW-W goalkeeper Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) from twenty yards out to give the Blazers the 2-1 advantage.

UW-W showed their resilience striking back quickly just over one minute later. Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) took a corner for the Warhawks and found the head of Kaitlyn Fritsch (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) who knocked it in to tie the game again, this time at two.

The teams played even for the rest of regulation.

The Warhawks put the pressure on in the first overtime, rattling off five shots to the Blazers' one. Unrelenting, the Warhawks outshot the Blazers 2-0 in the second overtime, but neither team could break the tie.

UW-W outshot their opponent 24-13 and notched ten corner kicks to St. Benedict's four. Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) made five saves in the game for the Warhawks.

The Warhawks will travel to Mequon on September 4 for a match against Concordia at 4 pm. UW-W returns home on September 6 to play Edgewood at Fiskum Field at 6 pm.
