Brawlers Top Pointers on the Road

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Warhawk wrestling team, ranked fourteenth in the latest national poll, defeated #21 UW-Stevens Point 29-7 on the road Thursday night. 

Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) got the night started on a high note for Whitewater with a major decision at 157 pounds. His 11-3 win over Jamey Simmons gave him his fifth win of the season and put the Warhawks up 4-0. Kegan Arthur (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) kept the momentum going with a 5-2 decision over Logan Hermson to give UW-W a 7-0 advantage. 

Bill Langford put the Pointers on the board with a major decision in the 174 pound weight class to pull UW-SP within three, 7-4. The Warhawks won the next five weight classes to put the match out of reach. Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) provided the restart for Whitewater at 184 pounds with a 13-3 major decision over Craig Brandvold to extend the UW-W lead to 11-4.

Top ranked Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) registered a technical fall at 197 pounds in 4:59 defeating Steve Asmondy 19-4 for his team-leading eighth win of the season. Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon), Conrad Bugay (Palatine, IL/Hersey) and Jimmy Nehls (Downers Grove, IL/North) won the next three bouts by decision for the Warhawks. Edgren, ranked second at 285 pounds, topped Points' Jordan Koranda 3-0. Bugay ground out the toughest and longest bout of the evening with 10-8 double overtime sudden victory win over Ryan Osse at 125 pounds followed by a 3-2 decision for fifth ranked Nehls over Lance Fabry.

Stevens Point added three points to their total at 141 pounds to make the score 25-7. Cam Loomis (River Falls/River Falls) put the final touches on the win with a 10-1 major decision over Points' John Roycraft in the 149 pound weight class. 

UW-Whitewater is 4-1 against Division III opponents this season. Stevens Point drops to 2-3.

The Warhawks return to the mat Saturday, splitting their squad for two tournaments. UW-W will compete in the Wisconsin Open in Somers, Wis. and the LIttle States tournament in Kenosha, Wis. simultaneously.
