Ryan Reid Scores OT Winner Against Sabres

Box Score Head coach Tony Guinn must have his team in great shape.  For the fourth time this season the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team has outlasted an opponent in overtime, this time it was in a 2-1 win over Marian University Tuesday in Fond du Lac.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took a corner kick for the Warhawks.  His corner found the head of Dante Schiro (Madison/LaFollette) for his first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead for UW-W heading into the half.

Less than ten minutes into the second half the Sabres scored an equalizer on a breakaway.

Bob Shone (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) had a chance to put UW-W ahead with a penalty kick with less than eight minutes to play but Sabre goalkeeper Jameson Hoertner made the save to preserve the tie and ultimately the game went into overtime.

Ten seconds into overtime UW-W goalie Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford), who was making his first start, came up big and made a save to keep the game tied at one.

With less than five minutes remaining in the first overtime, Gottwald took a free kick for the Warhawks.  The ball deflected off of Schiro and Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) before falling to the feet of Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) who knocked it in to win the game.  This is the second time this season a goal by Reid has ended a game.  He scored a game winner in a double overtime match against Augustana earlier this season.

The Warhawks, currently receiving votes in the latest D3soccer.com top 25 poll, improve to 10-2-0 and the Sabres fall to 3-7-1.

UW-W will remain on the road for their next match on Wednesday in Bloomington, Illinois.  The Warhawks will face the Titans in a 7:30 pm match.
