Warhawks Clinch WIAC Title for Fourth Consecutive Year

Box Score With a 2-1 win over UW-Platteville Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, the UW-Whitewater women's soccer team clinched at least a share of the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.  This is the fourth consecutive conference crown for the women, 13-0-3 overall and 7-0-0 in the WIAC.  The Pioneers fall to 7-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.

The Pioneers struck first scoring just 81 seconds into the match, perhaps catching the home team off guard.

Two and a half minutes later Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) tallied her first goal of the season when she sent a cross towards the net that bounced off a Platteville defender and into the goal to tie the score.

Both teams continued to pressure the others' defense, but it was the Warhawks who struck next with the decisive goal in the 43rd minute.  Sierra High (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) took a corner for the Warhawks and Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) redirected it to teammate Natalie Lechner (Waukesha/Catholic Memorial) who punched it in for a 2-1 UW-W lead.

The UW-W defense did the rest.  The Pioneers got just one shot off in the second half; in fact, UW-W outshot the visiting Pioneers 22-5.

The Warhawks have clinched the top seed in the WIAC tournament that begins on November 5th.  UW-W will receive a first round bye and host the lowest remaining seed from the first round games in a semifinal match on November 7.  The winner of the WIAC tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Warhawks can clinch the regular season title outright with a win over UW-Stevens Point next Saturday in Stevens Point.

UW-W will return to the field for a non-conference match on October 30 against Augustana at Fiskum Field in Whitewater at 7 pm.
