Box Score Twelfth-ranked UW-Whitewater lost a five game match to UW-La Crosse 3-2 (24-26, 15-25, 30-28, 25-12, 15-12) in Mitchell Hall on the La Crosse campus Wednesday night.
UW-W seemingly had the Eagles on the ropes, eking out a win in overtime in game one and handily winning game two. Taking the middle game into five extra points before winning, UW-L began its comeback. As Whitewater did in game two, UW-L easily won game four to set up game five as the decisive contest in the match. UW-L took an 8-4 lead, but Whitewater crawled back to knot the score at 10-10 before La Crosse closed out the match.
Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) recorded 13 kills, leading the Whitewater, while adding 11 digs.
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) topped UW-W with 18 digs, and
Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) had 32 assists.
Ariel Johnston (Rockford, IL/Guilford) was also in double figures in kills with 11. La Crosse's Leah Putzler was tops in the match with 16 kills, with teammates Crystal Ziegler (13) and Lauren Probst (10) also tallying double figure kills. Cassie Raduka passed for 29 assists and Chantel York added 22. Ziegler chipped in 22 digs and Putzler added 13.
Whitewater hit .121 as a team and La Crosse hit .210. UW-W had four ball handling errors, UW-L none, and the Warhawks had three blocking errors and the Eagles two.
UW-W is 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-L is 9-8 and 1-2 in league play.
UW-Whitewater will host the Whitewater Invitational II Friday and Saturday in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Williams Center on campus. Play begins with UW-W facing UW-Oshkosh in a non-conference tilt at 3:00 Friday.
