Box Score UW-Whitewater, ranked fourth in the D3football.com poll, upped its mark to 2-1 with a 34-7 win over UW-Stevens Point in Perkins Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Desmin Ward (Milwaukee/Hamilton) rushed for 164 yards on 21 carries as UW-W piled up 300 yards rushing, for a 6.4 per carry average.  The Warhawks limited UW-SP to 65 yards on the ground on 33 attempts. 

Whitewater received the opening kick, and on the first play of the drive Warhawk quarterback Lee Brekke (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie)'s pass was intercepted by Colton Zimmerman at the Point 38.  Whitewater's defense forced a four and out.

Whitewater went to Ward on its next drive, with the senior tailback carrying the ball seven times for 28 yards on UW-W's ten play 55 yard drive that ended with Ward's four yard scoring run at 9:44.

The Pointers' next drive, like Whitewater's first, lasted just one play with sophomore lineman Joe Cyncher recovering a Mitch Beau fumble at the Pointer 25.  It took just one more play, a pass from Brekke to Jake Kumerow (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin), to make it 14-0 at 9:28 in the first, which is where the first quarter ended.

Point cut the lead in half on a 15 play, 77 yard drive that ended with Beau running up the middle for the score from four yards out to make it 14-7 at 8:52.

UW-W responded with a 90 yard drive that took just five plays, with Brekke finding Kumerow again with a 37 yard scoring toss to up the Whitewater lead to 21-7 3:12 before intermission.

Lou Minnett forced a Beau fumble at the Whitewater 43 that Mykaell Bratchett (Milwaukee/Hope) recovered at the Pointer 46.  Eric Kindler (Germantown/Germantown)'s 46 yard field goal with seven seconds left in the half sent the Warhawks into the lockerroom with a 24-7 lead.

Coming out of halftime the Warhawk defense forced a three and out, and the offense set the tone for the half with a 70 yard drive.  Brekke found fullback Bernie Tamsett (Waterford/Waterford) with an 11 yard pass to up Whitewater's lead to 31-7 with 8:48 in the third. 

Warhawk linebacker Ryan Cortez (Palatine, IL/Palatine) snuffed the next Pointer drive with an interception that he returned to the 18 of Stevens Point.  Kindler's 35 yard field with 6:43 in the third ended the scoring for the day, 34-7.

Whitewater's defense forced six turnovers, three interceptions and three fumbles that the Warhawks recovered. 

Theo Maglio stood out of the UW-SP offense with six receptions for 78 yards. 

Sophomore defensive back Marcus McLin (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) had four solo tackles and three assists, with an interception, for the Warhawks.  Junior defensive back James Sladek led the Pointers defense with two solo tackles and eight assists.

The Warhawks had their 46-game win streak, the fourth longest in NCAA football history, snapped last week.  UW-W is 2-1 overall.  Although both teams belong to the WIAC it was not a conference game.  For the second year league members are playing one WIAC school twice because of the league's difficulty in finding non-conference games.  UW-SP is 1-2.

UW-W will play at sixteenth ranked UW-Platteville September 29 at 1:00 in Ralph Davis Pioneer Stadium.
