Warhawks Go "McGarrett" on Superior

Box Score The UW-Whitewater volleyball team, ranked thirteenth in the AVCA III poll, may not have been in Hawaii, but they used "5-0" runs to open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-15) at UW-Superior Friday night.

With a 15-14 lead in game one UW-W ran off a 5-0 spurt to open a 20-14 lead.  Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) served all five points, including a service ace.  The Yellowjackets stayed close all the way to 21-21 in game two, but the visiting Warhawks scored five of the last six points for the win.  The Warhawks had another 5-0 run in the final game, increasing their margin from 12-8 to 17-8 on the way to the ten point win.

Lillge led all players with 15 kills in the match, with Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) contributing a match high 37 assists and Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) leading both teams with 21 digs.  Jessica Dvergsten and Jessica Zimmerman had six kills apiece for UW-S, with Keely Deadrick passing for 15 assists with 15 digs to lead her team.

The loss broke a five game win streak for Superior, while the win was the third straight for UW-W.

UW-W is 11-4 overall and UW-Superior is 12-3.  Whitewater will move on to Eau Claire to face the UW-EC Blugolds Saturday.
