Warhawks Bounce Back with Two Wins at UW-RF Invite, Nobilio on All-Tournament team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The tenth ranked Warhawk volleyball team bounced back from two losses Friday with two wins Saturday including a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 18-25, 25-15) win over St. Scholastica Saturday morning and a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) sweep of Gustavus Adolphus Saturday afternoon in the UW-River Falls Invite. With the two wins, UW-W improves to 10-4 on the season.

Sophomore libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) was also named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts in both UW-W wins. Against St. Scholastica Saturday, she had 30 digs, and later against Gustavus Adolphus she had 14 digs.

The Warhawks were rolling after a 3-1 win in the first match of the day Saturday leading to a 3-0 sweep of Gustavus Adolphus. The Warhawk offense pounded down 39 kills and posted six service errors while the defense notched six total blocks and 52 digs.

Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) recorded a match high eleven kills and added two service aces. Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) took on the setting duties posting 34 of the team's total 35 assists. Libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) kept her double figure dig streak alive with 14 digs in the contest. Nobilio totaled 44 digs in the two matches played Saturday.

The Warhawks are 10-4 this season and GAC falls to 6-7.

UW-W will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a weekend on the road. Whitewater will travel to UW-Superior Friday, September 21 for a 7:00pm game and make their way to UW-Eau Claire for a 12:00 match-up Saturday, September 22.

St. Scholastica Recap || Box Score ||
UW-W took the floor Saturday playing like they had something to prove. A short turnaround from last night's matches didn't seem to bother the Warhawks as they topped St. Scholastica in the first match of the invite Saturday.

The difference from yesterday was a combined effort with both the offense and defense playing well. Whitewater pounded down 58 kills in the match hitting .217 in four sets while holding St. Scholastica to a .122 attack percentage. Defensively, UW-W dug up 95 Saint attack attempts and combined for seven total blocks in the match.

Jessica Sabey (Merrill/Merrill) posted a match high 14 kills in the contest followed by Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown)'s 12 kills, 17 digs and two assist blocks. Three other Warhawks notched double figure digs led by Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg)'s 30, her second 30 plus dig match of the season, Chelsea Mutton (Rockford, IL/Rockford East) added 15 and setter Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) recorded 12 digs to go along with 47 assists.

The Saints drop to 5-5 and the Warhawks up their record to 9-4.

UW-W will face Gustavus Adolphus in their final match of the UW-RF Invite. The Warhawks swept GAC earlier this season the in the UW-Whitewater Invitational September 1.

St. Thomas Recap || 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-20) || Box Score ||

A beat up Warhawk squad left all the cards on the table at the end of the match against the number eight team in the nation but the Tommies came out with a better hand in UW-W's first match of the UW-RF Invite.

Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) led Whitewater at the net with 13 kills, tied for the match high, and three assist blocks. Alivia Holman (South Beloit, IL/Rockton Hononegah) added eight more in 16 attempts and Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) hit .455 pounding down six kills in eleven attempts while adding three total blocks. Libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg), the league leader in digs per set, had a match high 12 digs. Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) and Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) split setting duties dishing out 21 and 9 assists respectively.

The Tommies were led by Jill Greenfield and Kelly Foley who notched 13 and 12 kills respectively. Three St. Thomas players posted 11 digs a piece in the match.

St. Thomas is 10-1 this season.

UW-Stevens Point Recap || 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) || Box Score ||

UW-W battled trying overcome adversity from sickness to injuries this week but dropped their second match of the night in the UW-RF Invite, bested by Stevens Point in a non-conference match-up 3-0.

The front row for the Pointers provided a road block for the Warhawk hitters thwarting 6.5 attack attempts with one solo and 11 assist blocks recorded and limiting UW-W to a .114 attack percentage in the match.

Lillge, the conference kills leader, led Whitewater with 11 kills, tied for a match high. Jessica Sabey (Merrill/Merrill) also notched double figure kills with ten in the match. Nobilio posted another match high in digs with 14 keeping her double figure dig streak alive for the season with 12 straight contests. Defensive specialist Chelsea Mutton (Rockford, IL/Rockford East) recorded ten digs for the Warhawks.

UW-Stevens Point's Christina Brinkman tied Lillge with a match high 11 kills. Hannah Picel posted 12 digs in the Pointer back row.

UW-SP is 10-2 this season and UW-W is 8-4.

The Warhawks look to bounce back with two matches left in the UW-RF Invite Saturday.
The first pins UW-W against St. Scholastica at 10:00 with the second match at 2:00 against Gustavus Adolphus.
