Box Score The UW-Whitewater men's soccer team, ranked eleventh in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, suffered their first loss of the season to fourth ranked Loras College 1-0 in the Hawk Cup at Rock Bowl Wednesday night in Dubuque, Iowa. The Warhawks are now 3-1 this season and the Duhawks move to 5-0-1.
The Duhawks rattled off eight shots including five on goal in the first half of play with Warhawk goalkeeper
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) on the saving end of four. UW-W notched two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of competition.
Loras started their offensive pressure on the Warhawk defense with a shot on goal at 3:47 by Erik Berkowitz that was thwarted by Mikesell.
Alex Szarzynski (Greenfield/South Milwaukee) had a chance at the goal at 10:39 that was saved by Loras goalie Dave Milkent.
Whitewater and Loras traded headers that flew wide of the goal less than two minutes apart at 19:08 and 20:40 before
Austin Saari (River Falls/River Falls)'s shot on goal at 27:56 was just wide. The Duhawks answered with back-to-back shots just four seconds apart at 30:43 and 30:47, both were saved by Mikesell.
Loras' Sean Lewis made good on his chance at the net with a goal at 39:31 off an assist from Sam Koenig, his second goal of the season and the first goal allowed by UW-W this season. Mikesell saved the last attempt at a goal by a Duhawk at 42:20 before the first half expired.
The second half continued much like the first with a very physical match played between the two teams. Whitewater added two more shots on goal and Mikesell saved four more Loras scoring opportunities.
Bob Shone (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) tried to put the Warhawks on the board at the beginning of the second half with a shot at 56:22 that was saved by the Loras goalkeeper.
Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) had an opportunity at 84:01 but Milkent once again closed the door on UW-W as the Duhawks stole the win.
Whitewater posted four shots on goal in the contest to Loras' nine. The Duhawks had the advantage in corner kicks 8-3 including six opportunities in the second half.
Goalie
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) is now 3-1 this season and Loras' goalkeeper Dave Milkent is 5-0-1 with five shutouts.
The Warhawks will host North Park University Sunday, September 16 with a 2:00 scheduled start.
