Box Score Macalester scored a goal in the 39th minute and went on to defeat the UW-Whitewater women's soccer team 1-0 Saturday at the Advantage Emblem Cup in Duluth, Minnesota. The tournament is being hosted by the College of St. Scholastica. UW-W falls to 0-2-0 early in the 2012 season and Macalester improves to 1-1-0.
The Scots fired off four shots in the first twenty minutes; three were off the mark and one was saved by UW-W goalkeeper
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley).
Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) answered with shot in the box for the Warhawks in the 20th minute but Macalaster goalie Ellen Palmquist made the save.
In the 39th minute Macalaster capitalized as UW-W was unable to clear the ball after Myers saved one shot and a UW-W defender stopped a second. On the third shot Georgia Cloepfil broke into the scoring column to give the Scots the 1-0 advantage.
Macalaster kept the pressure on in the second half ripping five shots in the first fifteen minutes. The Warhawks answered with a shot on goal by
Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) but Palmquist was again there to make the save.
Sarah Sedlar (Racine, Wis./Racine Case) and
Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) also had chances to score the tying goal but Sedlar's shot sailed high and Tooren's shot was blocked.
In the final minutes
Alyssa Chamberlain (DePere/DePere) made a last ditched effort by UW-W to knot the score but Palmquist made her final, and most important, save of the game.
Macalaster outshot UW-W 17-7 in the game and Myers was forced to make seven saves.
UW-W has yet to break into the scoring column this season as they were shutout in their first game of the year on Friday 1-0.
Alyssa Chamberlain (DePere/DePere) and
Laren Nashleanas (Brookfield/Brookfield East) were named to the all-tournament team.
UW-W will return to action when they host the University of Dubuque on September 9 at 2:30 pm at Fiskum Field on the campus of UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks will look to win their first home opener since 2008.
