Edward Horrocks (Milton Keynes, England/Ousedale) corner kick in the second minute was the only goal of the game as the Warhawks defeated St. Scholastica at the Advantage Emblem Cup in Duluth, Minnesota Friday. The game marks the first of the season for both teams and the first win for new UW-W head coach
Tony Guinn.
UW-W outshot the Saints seven to four in the first period and then played for possession in the second half, firing off only three shots to St. Scholastica's five. The Warhawks did test Saint goalkeeper Adam Hewitt as he was forced to make five saves in the game, two in the 61st minute on shots by
Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton) and
Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago).
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine), the UW-W keeper, posted a shutout, the ninth of his career, making two saves in the game. Mikesell is sixth all-time in shutouts at UW-Whitewater.
Each team was dealt a yellow card in the 74th minute and the Warhawks racked up eleven fouls in the game to the Saints' seven.
The Warhawks will face Concordia-Moorhead at 1:00 pm Saturday in their second match at the Advantage Emblem Cup. The games are being hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. A point system is being used to determine an overall winner. A win notches a team six points, a tie gets them three, an extra point is added for each goal up to three, and another point is awarded for a shutout. After game one UW-W has eight points.
UW-W's first home game will be September 8 at 3:00 pm against the University of Dubuque. Fiskum field, UW-W's home facility, is northwest of the Williams Center on campus.
