Warhawks 4-0 in Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team, ranked seventeenth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, kicked off the 2012 season with a home invitational this weekend. The Warhawks did not lose a set in four matches at the first of three UW-Whitewater invitationals scheduled this season.

UW-W defeated Wheaton College 3-0 || Box Score ||
Whitewater notched its fourth sweep of the invitational with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-15) win over Wheaton College in the final match of the UW-Whitewater Invitational.

UW-W bounced back after a shaky first set to record their best set of the invitational in game two. The Warhawks hammered down 16 kills in 25 attempts for a .560 attack percentage in the second set of the final match. Whitewater totaled 44 kills, hitting .317 to Wheaton's .082 and just 21 kills. UW-W also held the advantage in service aces, 9-3, and digs 56-40 in the match.

Caroline Langer (Menomonee Falls/Milwaukee Pius XI) led the Warhawk offense with 16 kills, the most for a Warhawk so far this season, in 32 attempts posting a .438 attack percentage. Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) hit .700 with a 7-10 performance with no errors at the net. Setter Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) dished up 39 assists, more than double Wheaton's team total, and added twelve digs in the match. Defensively, libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) notched her sixth straight, going back to last season, double figure digs match with 15.

Whitewater will head to St. Louis for the WashU Asics National Invite Friday and Saturday, September 7-8. UW-W will take on host school Washington University in St. Louis Friday at 3:30 and face Otterbein in the night cap. Saturday's schedule has the Warhawks pinned against Concordia-Moorhead and Elmhurst at 10:00 and 12:30 respectively.

UW-W defeated Gustavus Adolphus 3-0 || Box Score ||
The Warhawks were on fire to start day two of the UW-Whitewater Invitational sweeping Gustavus Adolphus College 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-16). UW-W's offense hit over .500 in the first two sets and totaled 44 kills in the match while the defense held the Gusties to just a .081 attack percentage in the match.

Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) led the Whitewater hitters with 14 kills and added eight digs. Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) pounded down ten kills and totaled five blocks in the contest. Caroline Langer (Menomonee Falls/Milwaukee Pius XI) went 8-13 hitting with no errors posting a .615 attack percentage with four service aces. Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) and Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) split setting duties to combine for 36 of Whitewater's 40 assists in the match. Defensively, libero Kesley Nobilio thwarted 17 GAC attack attempts. Nobilio has posted double-digit digs in all three matches so far this season.

UW-W will wrap up the invitational against Wheaton College Saturday at 2:00 in Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.

In Whitewater's second match of the day, the Warhawks defeated Central College 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14). UW-W posted 39 kills in the match and defensively dug up 52 Dutch attack attempts.

Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) led the charge at the net for Whitewater pounding down seven kills. Ariel Johnston (Rockford, IL/Guilford) and Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) ran the middle with five kills each. Libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) led the defense with 15 digs. Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) and Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) split setting duties and combined for 35 of the team's 39 total assists.

UW-W will face Gustavus Adolphus Saturday, September 1 at 10:00 am and round out the invitational against Wheaton at 2:00.

The Warhawks topped Augsburg 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) in the first match of the season. UW-W posted 43 kills in the matched and was equally as sharp defensively recording 42 digs and six total blocks.

Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) and Caroline Langer (Menomonee Falls/Milwaukee Pius XI) led Whitewater offensively with 11 kills apiece. Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) notched 37 assists in the contest. Libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) led the Warhawk defense with 21 of the team's 42 digs while Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) posted four total blocks defensively at the net.

UW-W will face Central College in the nightcap Friday at 7:00 in Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Williams Center.
