Box Score UW-Whitewater, ranked fifth in the D3hoops.com poll, upped its record to 16-1 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 62-45 win at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night.
Oshkosh was as cold as Cruella Deville's heart to open the game, missing their first nine shots from the field. John Flanigan's two free throws at 12:34 were the first points on the board for the Titans. Fortunately for UW-O, Whitewater wasn't shooting five alarms, with Flanigan's points making it 8-2 in favor of UW-W.
Oshkosh pulled within one twice in the first half, on a Flanigan layup at 8:07 to cut Whitewater's lead to 14-13, and again with 3:36 left and UW-W in front 23-22. UW-W took a 30-26 lead into the lockerroom.
UW-W shot 45% from the field in the first half, Oshkosh 38%. Both teams were 3-7 from three point range, but Oshkosh went 5-5 from the line and Whitewater 1-2. Whitewater senior forward
Alex Edmunds (Cedarburg/) led both teams with eight points, also grabbing five rebounds. Cory Nickel was 2-3 from the field, all of them on three point attempts, to lead UW-O.
UW-W blew out of the lockerroom with a 15-0 run, upping their lead to 45-26 with 14:57 left in the game. Five Warhawks scored in that run. It took Oshkosh more than five minutes, until 14:50, to score their first points of the half. UW-W rolled on to a 50-28 lead, their largest margin of the game, with 11:37 left. UW-O never pulled closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Whitewater, the second best field goal shooting team in Division III at 52%, made 49% of their shots while the Titans shot 40%. UW-W accumulated 12 steals and turned the ball over just seven times, tying a season best also accomplished versus Edgewood College January 4.
Edmunds, playing in his second game this season, led UW-W with a double double, 14 points and game high ten rebounds. He was joined in double figures by four teammates,
Luke Knoble (Boscobel/Boscobel) with 12, Cody Odgegaard 11, and
Eric Bryson (Elkhorn/Elkhorn) and
Lucas Burns (Janesville/Craig) ten each. Bryson dished out seven assists. Oshkosh was led by Flanigan and Dylan Wurtz, both with 11 points. Flanigan also shared game rebounding honors with Edmunds with 10.
UW-Oshkosh is 4-13 overall and 0-8 in the WIAC.
Whitewater played without senior center
Chris Davis (Madison/East), the WIAC's leading scorer and number eight scorer in Division III at 24.6 per game, who has an injury.
The Warhawks will travel to Menomonie to face UW-Stout Saturday for a 6:00 tipoff. The next home game for UW-W is January 25 at 7:00 with UW-Stevens Point visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
