'Hawks Sweep Second Consecutive WIAC Opponent

They did it Friday and they did it again Saturday.  The UW-Whitewater volleyball team swept a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent for a second consecutive day, this time UW-Eau Claire, in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena on the campus of UW-Whitewater.  The Warhawks (10-4, 2-1 WIAC) defeated the Blugolds (8-9, 2-1 WIAC) 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21).

In the first game the Warhawks took an early four point lead at 10-6.  Eau Claire battled back to cut that to 10-8 but never got closer than three the rest of the way.

Game two was very similar to the first.  The Warhawks went up 10-8 before UW-EC cut it to 10-9 but Whitewater scored the next three points and the margin was never smaller than two.

The final game saw the 'Golds jump out to a 2-0 lead before the Warhawks tied it.  The Blugolds scored the next point, but the ever resilient Warhawks scored the next four to go up 6-3.  UW-EC answered back with four straight points of their own to go up 7-6.  The team traded the next two points and then Whitewater scored four in a row again.  Not to be outdone, the Blugolds scored five straight and regained the lead at 13-12.  The game went back and forth until the Warhawks, down 17-19, scored seven straight to put the game out of reach for Eau Claire.

Senior outside hitter Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) led the way with seventeen kills for the Warhawks.  Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg), a sophomore setter, dished out 34 assists.  UW-W had two players with double digit digs; Kelli Trautmann (Seymour/Little Chute) (15) and Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) (11).  Alivia Holman (South Beloit, IL/Rockton Hononegah) was strong at the net recording two solo blocks, and two block assists.

The Warhawks hit .229 in the match compared to .124 for the visitors.

UW-W will host UW-La Crosse on September 28 in a match beginning at 7:00 pm at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in the Williams Center on the campus of UW-Whitewater.
