UW-Stout scored just under five minutes into the game and controlled much of the first half to hold on to defeat UW-Whitewater 2-1 in Menomonie Saturday. The Warhawks (4-4-1, 1-1-1 WIAC) have not lost to Stout (5-1-0, 2-1-0 WIAC) since 2005.
Jesse Lankford scored her third goal of the season in the fifth minute of Saturday's game to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead.
Stout continued to keep the pressure on the entire first half outshooting the Warhawks 7-1, including three consecutive shots that UW-W goalkeeper
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) had to save.
The Blue Devils added another tally with just 30 seconds remaining in the half to go up 2-0 at intermission.
UW-W turned the tables in the second half, applying that same pressure they felt from the Blue Devils in the first. Just fourteen seconds into the second half
Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) fired a shot on goal that had to be saved. Roughly thirty seconds later
Becky Plese (Sussex/Arrowhead) got another shot on goal and it was again stopped by the Stout goalkeeper.
Tooren fired another shot on goal in the 59th minute that had to be saved and
Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/West) sailed one wide in the 63rd minute.
UW-W finally broke through in the 69th minute when
Emily Gerber (DeForest/DeForest) found an open
Kaitlyn Fritsch (Monona Grove/Monona Grove) who knocked the ball in for her first goal of the season.
The Warhawks continued to keep the pressure on in the final twenty minutes firing off four more shots and earning six corner kicks but were unable to tie the game.
UW-Whitewater will return to the pitch when they travel to UW-Oshkosh on September 28 for a match beginning at 4:30 pm.
