Ryan Boyd (Waunakee/Waunakee) scored the first goal of the game and the last goal of the game in UW-W's 2-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan Thursday in Bloomington. The victory is the first for UW-W this season, 1-4, as IWU falls to 3-2.
UW-W was aggressive the entire game, recording 18 shots to the Titans' eight. In the 21st minute UW-W broke through and scored when Boyd buried his first goal off the foot of
John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee).
Fifteen minutes later Angelo Catalano knotted the score with his first goal of the season.
The 'Hawks fired four more shots in the first half but were unable to take the lead going into halftime.
Illinois Wesleyan was slapped with three fouls and two yellow cards in the first six minutes of the second half, and Boyd was nominated to take a penalty kick after a foul in the box. The senior midfielder netted his second goal of the game, and season, to give UW-W a 2-1 lead.
UW-W kept the pressure on outshooting the Titans 9-4 for the remainder of the game.
The second half was littered with fouls and yellow cards. The overall foul count was 33, 15 for UW-W. Illinois Wesleyan totaled four yellow cards in the match to the 'Hawks' one.
Aaron Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) earned the victory at goalkeeper for UW-W making four saves in the match, including two consecutive saves in the 66th minute that would have tied the game.
The Warhawks will compete again when they host Ripon College on Sunday, September 18 in a match at 3:00 pm at Fiskum Field.
