It wasn't for lack of opportunity. UW-W fell 1-0 to the University of Dubuque Sunday in Dubuque, Iowa.
Dubuque got the first chance, with Warhawk goalie Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) making the stop at 5:33. Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere/De Pere) got off a header at 8:26 for the Warhawks, but it went wide. Later in the first half, around the 21 minute mark, UD's Madeline Mobile had a shot blocked by Warhawk defenders, and Nicole Prudhomme's shot was saved by Myers. Chamberlain had another header at 32:16, blocked this time by a Dubuque defender, and shortly after Riley Kirchoff (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) put the ball on net but Tiffany Duncan made the save for UD to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Whitewater got the first scoring opportunity in the second half, with a Pamela Lisowe (New Holstein/New Holstein) shot saved by Duncan. Chamberlain got another chance with a kick on net at 60:36, but Duncan came through again. At 64:06 it was Sarah Sedlar (Racine/Case) who broke through to challenge Duncan, with Duncan again making the save. At 76:03, with no Dubuque shots in the interim, Whitewater's Stacey Schultz (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) could not get it past Duncan.
Dubuque's offense finally took some of the pressure off Duncan, with Megan Siepler scoring her first goal of the season on a breakaway. Alexandria Watkins had the assist.
Whitewater still did not go quietly, with Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/West) (82:05) and Kaitlyn Fritsch (Monona Grove/Monona Grove) (84:39) taking it to Duncan, without hitting the back of the net.
UW-W led in shots taken 16-6 and in corner kicks 12-3. Duncan had seven saves for Dubuque.
Whitewater is 2-2 and Dubuque is 3-2. The Warhawks will play at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois Thursday, then host UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at 2:00 Saturday, September 17. Home games are played at Fiskum Field, west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center on the north end of campus. Free parking is adjacent to the field.
