A milestone was set in the final match at the invitational as senior
Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) piled up 18 digs to record career match 103 with double figure digs, surpassing Stephanie Everett and Angie Wildish for the top spot in the UW-W record book. Four more Warhawks joined her in double digit digs in the match. Senior
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) led UW-W at the net with a match high 16 kills, adding four assist blocks. Teammate
Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) added 14 more kills to the Whitewater offense.
Whitewater's next contest will take place in St. Louis, Missouri as Washington University of St. Louis hosts the Asics Invite Friday-Saturday, September 9-10.
Friday Recap
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball team, ranked twenty-fourth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason top 25 poll, kicked off the 2011 season with two wins at the first of multiple UW-Whitewater Invitationals this season.
The Warhawks started the invitational with a close win over Wheaton College, 3-1 (25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20). UW-W was led at the net by senior outside hitter
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) who hammered down a match high 17 kills. Two other Warhawks joined Sanchez in double digits, including freshman middle blocker
Ariel Feiertag (Brown Deer/Brown Deer) with 16 and sophomore outside hitter
Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) posted 12.
The Warhawk defense kept the Wheaton hitters at bay with 97 total digs and six total blocks, with five Whitewater players recording ten or more digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) posted a match high 20 digs and was joined in double digits by teammates
Kelli Trautmann (Seymour/Little Chute) (18),
Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) (16),
Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) (13) and Sanchez (11).
In match two, Whitewater handed Lakeland its second loss of the day with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-21) win. The biggest advantage in the match came from the service line. UW-W recorded 14 aces to Lakeland's two, with Buss accounting for five. Nine players on the Whitewater team posted kills in the match giving UW-W a 32-22 kill advantage. The same held true in the backcourt as nine Warhawks compiled numbers in the dig column.
Whitewater will continue play in the UW-W Invitational Saturday, September 3 facing Alma College at 11:00 and St. Norbert College at 3:00. All matches will be played in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Williams Center.
