Box score

Maybe it was a long bus ride on one of the coldest days of the year, Whitewater started out just 2-9 from the field while Platteville was shooting 7-13 on the way to a 7 point lead. Rob Stallion hit a jumper at 9:58 to give Platteville its largest lead, 21-12. They would equal that nine point lead on three other occasions in the first half. Whitewater scored 5 points in 30 seconds to cut the margin to 27-23 at 4:45 and 3 minutes later followed with a 6-0 spurt to close the gap to 30-29 at the half.

Junior center Chris Davis (Madison/East) opened the second half with back-to-back threes, the first one giving UW-W its first lead of the game 32-30.  Davis went on to score Whitewater's first ten points of the half, hitting four of his first five shots, and at 17:15 UW-W led 39-33.  Platteville followed up shortly after with a 6-0 spurt to cut the Warhawks' lead to 40-39 at 13:39.  Senior guard Nick Allen tied the game at 51-51 with a free throw with 7:21 left.  With 4:58 on the clock Pioneer forward Matt Wiek hit a three to give UW-P its first lead of the second half, 57-54, and the Pioneers did not trail after that.  With 0:29 left freshman guard Cody Odegaard (Poynette/Poynette) made a layup to pull Whitewater within two, 61-59, but seven seconds later junior guard Brett Stangel hit a pair of free throws to make it 63-59 Platteville.  UW-W missed a three point attempt with five seconds left, and Stallion made two free throws to end the scoring after a Whitewater foul.

After both teams shot almost identical percentages in the first half (45%/44%), Platteville shot 50% in the second half and Whitewater was held to 35%.  Davis led the Warhawks with 16 points, with sophomore guard Antone Byrd (Milwaukee/Washington) adding 12 and junior forward Alex Edmunds (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) 10 points.  Byrd and freshman guard Eric Bryson (Elkhorn/Elkhorn) had six rebounds each for UW-W.  Allen shared game scoring honors with 16 points for Platteville, and freshman center Chas Cross contributed 15 and eight rebounds.  Pioneer senior forward Eric Wall grabbed 12 rebounds, and also led both teams with six assists.

UW-W, 14-8 overall and 7-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will host UW-Eau Claire at 3:00 Saturday in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.  UW-P is also 14-8 overall and 7-6 in league play.
