Women Edged by Loras

UW-Whitewater fought back from deficits twice Wednesday night, but Loras prevailed in a 3-2 match in Dubuque, Iowa.

box score

Loras got on the board first, with their first shot of the game, with Jessica Kern netting a goal at 8:51.  That lead stood up into halftime as the Warhawks went without a shot in the half.

After totaling one goal in the first 45 minutes, the teams combined for four scores in the second 45.

Whitewater finally directed a shot on net at the 66:48 mark, and it came on a penalty kick.  Laren Nashleanas (Brookfield/East) was fouled in the box, then notched her first goal of the season to tie the score 1-1.

Turn about being fair play, Kern scored again for Loras at 70:56, also on penalty kick to put the Duhawks in front 2-1.

Nearing the end of the game, Whitewater knotted the game up with Natalie Johnson (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) getting her first of the season with an assist from Kelsey Finn (Glendale/Nicolet) at 85:50.

As the clock ticked down Loras capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net.  Hillary Wilson knocked it in at 87:55 for the game winner.

Loras took 20 shots in the game, Whitewater ten.  Loras' shots were evenly divided 10-10, and Whitewater put more pressure on with eight of its shots in the second half.  Both teams had seven fouls, and Loras had two more corner kicks, five to three, than UW-W.

UW-Whitewater is 1-2-0 this season.  The Warhawks will play at the University of Saint Thomas (MN) Saturday and at Wartburg College (IA) Sunday.  The next home match for Whitewater will be Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00 with UW-Oshkosh visiting Bob Fiskum Field for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.  The field is on the north end of campus near the stadium, and free parking is adjacent to the field.
