Football Ups Record to 3-0

UW-Whitewater, ranked number one in the poll of NCAA III teams, defeated Campbellsville University 37-7 Saturday afternoon in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

box score

Prior to last week's win over Dakota State, UW-W had never had three backs rush for 100+ yards in a game.  Now it's happened two weeks in a row.  Booker Stanley (Milwaukee/Whitefish Bay) carried 18 times for 116 yards, Levell Coppage (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) 14 for 114, and Antwan Anderson (Madison/Madison Memorial) 14 for 104.  The Warhawks averaged 6.7 yards per rush.

Whitewater opened the scoring on its first drive, going 75 yards in seven plays.  Coppage broke a 34 yard run to key the drive, with Matt Blanchard (Lake Zurich, IL/Lake Zurich) hitting Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford) with a 13 yard scoring pass at 8:38.

UW-W made it two for two, this time using nine plays to go 67 yards.  Coppage accounted for 36 of the yards on the ground, including a six yard scoring run with 3:31 left in the first quarter.

And it was 3-3.  Whitewater marched 80 in eight plays to go up 21-0 on another score by Coppage, this time from eight yards out with 11:50 left in the second quarter.

Before the end of the half UW-W took advantage of a short field to push the ball to CU's 14, but the drive ended with a missed field goal, the first of four that missed the mark in the game.

The Tigers roared back from the Whitewater miscue with a ten play, 80 yard drive, with a Robert Hill to Scott Warrenhuffman for 40 yards with just 0:56 left in the first half to cut Whitewater's lead 21-7.

UW-W still had some gas in the tank, quickly moving the ball to Campbellsville's five, but a second missed field goal after a lightning drive left the score 21-7 going in to the lockerroom.

Blanchard found fullback Bernie Tamsett (Waterford/Waterford Union) with a five yard swing pass, just Tamsett's second reception of the year, to put UW-W up 28-7 with 6:17 left in the third.  And that's where the score stood after three quarters.

A Kris Rosholt (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) punt forced CU to start a drive from its own eight, and two plays later Robert Hill was called for intentional grounding in the endzone to give UW-W a safety and a 30-7 lead.  It was Whitewater's first safety since the NCAA III playoff semifinals in 2008, December 13, against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Whitewater wrapped up the scoring with Anderson scoring on a one yard run, appropriate since he had carried the ball the other three plays on the drive for 55 yards.

UW-W had 32 first downs and limited Campbellsville to 12.  Eighteen of those for Whitewater came on the ground, compared to two rushing first downs for CU.  The Warhawks rushed for 357 yards, the Tigers 64, and the Tigers averaged 2.1 yards per rush.  The UW-W offense totaled 531, CU 231.  CU was also hindered by nine penalties for 100 yards, and Whitewater dominated the ball with 35:50 of possession time.   Whitewater went 5-9 in the red zone, with the missed field goals making up the difference.

Campbellsville DB Jeffrey DeMary led both teams with thirteen tackles, three of them solo.  The Tiger defense also recorded the first sack of the year allowed by UW-W.  Warrenhuffman stood out for the CU offense, catching five balls for 68 yards, including the TD.

UW-W is 3-0, Campbellsville is 2-2.  The Warhawks have an open date next Saturday, with a Thursday night game, September 30, at UW-Platteville to open the quest for a sixth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship next on the schedule.
