Warhawks Serve Edgewood Season Opening Loss

The fourteenth ranked Warhawk volleyball team kicked off the 2010 season with a three set win over Edgewood College (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) at the Edgewood triangular in Madison, WI Wednesday afternoon.

UW-W started the season off with a bang in the first set pounding down 17 kills with just two attack errors for a .536 hitting percentage. Stellar defense held Edgewood to just six kills and forced five attack errors as Whitewater strolled to a 25-15 opening set win.

The second set, although riddled with errors by both teams, ended with the Warhawks on top 25-17. UW-W still hit for double-digit kills with ten and held EC to just four.

A 10-4 run in favor of the Warhawks in the middle of set three brought the score to 22-12 and put the set and match out of reach for the Eagles. Whitewater took the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Junior Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) and senior Katy Krajnak (Racine/Case) led the Warhawks at the net with eight kills apiece. Krajnak added two blocks. Freshman Ariel Johnston (Rockford, IL/Guilford) stepped in with five kills in eight attempts recording just one error. Junior Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) served up four aces and dished out 26 assists in the win. Defensively, junior Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) picked up where she left off last season posting her tenth consecutive match with double digit digs recording 14.

As a team Whitewater pounded down 35 kills to Edgewood's 16. UW-W won the serve battle with 10 aces to zero for the Eagles.

UW-W will face Lawrence University in the second match of the Edgewood Triangular at 6:00 pm Wednesday.
