Warhawks Sweep Superior for WIAC Title

UW-Whitewater clinched sole possession of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with an 11-3, 10-2 sweep of UW-Superior at Ted Wheratt Field in Superior, Wisconsin Sunday.  The title is Whitewater's third in a row, seventh in the last eight years, and ninth in the last eleven.

With a share of the league crown on the line the Warhawks left little doubt, scoring five times, on just two hits, in the first inning.  Two walks and two errors by the Yellowjackets contributed to the rally.  

Superior scored once in the second, but Whitewater doubled that with two in the fourth to make it 7-1 Whitewater after four.  

Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker)'s lead off home run, his fifth of the season, upped the margin to 8-1.  Not be outdone, Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East) opened the seventh inning with his team-leading tenth homer, and the Warhawks added another for a 10-1 lead.  

Superior DH Shaun Marshall went yard to give UW-S two runs in the bottom of the seventh.  

Warhawk catcher Rob Coe (Appleton/North) hit UW-W's third homer of the game, his second of the year, in the ninth to end the scoring.

Aaron Leitner (Chilton/Chilton ) upped his record to 5-1 with seven innings of work.  He gave up eight hits, walked three and struck out six.  Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) went the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.  Rightfielder Daniel Putnam (Ashland /Ashland), Coe and Beyer each had two hits for UW-W, with Beyer leading with three RBI's.  

UW-S used three pitchers in the game.  The Yellowjacket offense had three players with two hits in their team total of nine.

Game two, same scenario.  The Warhawks scored twice in the top of the first -- without getting a base hit.  UW-S committed three errors, and issued a walk, to manufacture runs for UW-W.

Whitewater tacked on another run in the fourth, helped by two walks.  Beyer knocked the ball out of the again with one out in the sixth.

A two run home run by Mike LaBelle in the bottom of the sixth cut Whitewater's lead to 4-2.  

Three singles led to another Warhawk run in the top of the eight to make it 5-2.

Whitewater scored five times in the top of the ninth, after the first two batters were retired.  One run came in when Superior pitchers hit back-to-back Warhawk batters, another came in after a Yellowjacket error, and pinch-hitter Kevin Barth (Tomah/Tomah) singled in the final two in just his seventh at bat of the season.

Donovan started and went seven and two thirds to move his record to 3-0.  He allowed five hits, walked six and struck out three.  Ben Versnik (West Allis/Hale) closed out the game, allowing just one hit.

Beyer went 3x4, and Coe added two more hits to his day, for UW-Whitewater.  

Misc
The conference title means that UW-Whitewater will host the WIAC Tournament, and be the number one seed, May 14-15 at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium.  

UW-W will stay in Superior to wrap up the WIAC season with a doubleheader Monday.  Monday's games were originally set for Saturday May 1, but were postponed by rain.

UW-Whitewater, ranked second in the Division III national poll, is 31-4 overall and 19-3 in  the WIAC.  Superior is 16-16, and 8-10 in the league.
