Warhawks Ninth, Kehoe National Champ

Aron Kehoe (Monroe/Monroe)'s title in the 800 meters and all-American honors in the high jump for Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater) led UW-Whitewater to a ninth place finish in the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana Friday and Saturday.  See Warhawk Championship Central

Kehoe ran a 1:54.13 in Friday's preliminaries to advance to Saturday's 800 final.  He won Saturday in 1:52.59, breaking his school record of 1:52.62 in the process.  Kehoe edged Nick Zeien of UW-River Falls, who finished second in 1:52.61.  Kehoe has qualified for the NCAA III indoor championship three years in a row, including all-American honors with a sixth place finish in the 800 in 2009.  His national title is the fourth national indoor event championship in school history, and the thirteenth overall for UW-Whitewater men's track and field (including the NCAA III outdoor meet).  Kehoe is the second UW-W men's team member to win the 800 meters, and the first indoors, with Steve Travis accomplishing the feat outdoors in 1992.

Buchholz finished fourth in the high jump, going 6-8.75 to equal his best performance of the season, to earn all-American honors.  Dillon Binkley of Illinois College won the event at 6-9.75.  Buchholz is now a two-time all-American, having finished eighth in the 2009 NCAA indoor meet.   He is the first Warhawk to place in the high jump twice in the national indoor meet, and the second high jumper in UW-W history to accomplish the feat twice in any national meet.  Dean Bohlman finished second in 1983 and eighth in '87 in the NCAA III outdoor meet.  Buchholz's teammate, Travis Morehouse (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove), who had also qualified for the high jump, was not able to compete Saturday.

The top eight finishers in each event, including relays, earn all-America recognition.

Also in Saturday's action, the UW-W 4x400 relay team finished eleventh in 3:21.12.  North Central won the event in 3:17.22.  Whitewater's quartet included Joe Bailey (Hartford/Hartford Union), Brian Martinezdelacotera (Franklin/Franklin), Tim Prelletz (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge), and Peter Schroeder (Ripon/Ripon).

In the only other final involving UW-W athletes, the distance medley relay finishing eleventh Friday evening.

Whitewater accumulated 15 points to tie for ninth place.  North Central College won the meet, followed in order by UW-Stevens Point, UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh 2-3-4.  The UW-W men's track and field team has ten top ten finishes in the NCAA III indoor meet in school history, including five times in the last six years.
