Sixth-Ranked Warhawks Top Eagles

UW-W was like a pair of old nylons Wednesday night, runs everywhere leading to a 67-52 win over UW-La Crosse at Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater.

UW-W a pair of runs, 10-0 and 10-2, to forge a 32-26 lead at halftime.  

Leading 37-27 Whitewater went on a 9-1 run, including four free throws by senior guard Dupree Fletcher (Milwaukee/Rufus King), to lead 46-28 at 14:35.  At 8:39 Dustin Mitchell (Lac Du Flambeau/Lakeland) layup started a 10-0 run that took the lead to 60-41 at 6:15.  UW-W equaled that nineteen point margin twice more in the second half, at 62-43 and 64-45.  Neither team scored in the last 1:30 of the contest.

Although Whitewater, shooting 51% coming in to the game, only shot 41% the Warhawk defense limited La Crosse to 32% shooting from the field.  La Crosse was 10-15 at the line, but UW-W doubled that output, going 20-24.  The Warhawks also controlled the boards, 45-33.

Mitchell, a senior center, put together his eighth double double of the season, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  Fletcher added 12 points, including 8-8 from the line, and freshman guard Nolan Free (Sheboygan/North), the shortest player in Whitewater's starting lineup, tied Mitchell with 11 boards.

La Crosse was led by junior guard Tony Mane's game high 24 points.  Sophomore forward Al Chery was the leading rebounder in the game, with 14.  

UW-W, ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com poll, is 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-L is 14-7 and 6-6.

Whitewater will play at UW-River Falls Saturday.  The next home contest for the Warhawks will be Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 with UW-Platteville visiting Williams Center.
