Gymnasts Top Gustavus

UW-Whitewater, second in the Division III rankings, defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 180.725 to 169.80 Saturday afternoon in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Warhawk gymnasts won all four events, plus the all-around competition.  Katie Thompson (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South) won the vault with a 9.20, with teammate Allison Nelson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) second at 9.10.  Justine Weyer (Colgate/Germantown) led a 1-2-3 Whitewater sweep on the uneven bars, with Weyer scoring 9.375 ahead of Thompson's 9.25 and a 9.10 from Annie Mix (Olive Branch, MS/SBEC).  It was Thompson again, taking first on the balance beam with a 9.25, to lead Warhawks Leah Applin (Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park), 9.125, and Siri Wischmann (Delano, MN/Delano), 9.0, in second and third place respectively.  Mary Kate Young (Lawrenceville, GA/Cullins Hill) added her name to the winners' list, placing first with a 9.375 in the floor exercise.  Thompson was second at 9.30.

Thompson's all-around total of 37.00 is the second highest by a Warhawk this season, and Young had the second best all-around score of 35.525.

The Warhawks made another entry in the school record book with the team uneven bars score, 45.05, fourteenth on the list.  The five women that contributed to the total included Veronica Overby (Kaneohe, HI/James B. Castle) (8.875), Young (8.45), Thompson (9.25), Mix (9.1) and Weyer (9.375).

UW-W's next competition will be Sunday, March 7.  The Warhawks will participate in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/West Regional meet hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota.  The conference/regional meet will finalize participants in the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association championship, March 26-27 at Springfield College (MA).  Whitewater finished third in the 2009 national meet.
